Week 5 Preview

Highley look for first home win, League leaders & Newport face tough trips

Highley will look for their first home win in week 5 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League as they entertain Hanwood. They had a nightmare first home game against Sir John Bayley, having just one winner, but will hope that Hanwood’s lack of green knowledge will help them this time round. Joint captain Ben Dixon is going back to basics and hopes to “score more than them” to get that win. They will be buoyed by their win on Wem USC last week, just a week after Hanwood got their first away win on the same green, and will hope to get that second away win. Sir John Bayley won’t be expecting a 15-1 again as they travel to Ifton, but did win on it 10-4 two seasons ago. Ifton had a good home win against Chester Road but have struggled on their travels to see them bottom of the league at the moment. Skipper Dickie Jones says “we will have to be on top form to get a home win against a team who are top of the league and if we can convert the close games we have been losing into wins then am sure we will.” Newport, in second place, have a tough trip to Wrockwardine Wood, but the Wrockites have struggled at home so far. Newport have started well, just like last season, and this is a big test of their title credentials, while Wrockwardine will want to build on some good away results.

Hanmer had a disappointing 3 winners at Chester Road, and will be conscious of how good visitors Wem USC have been good on the road this season, and winning at their place last year. Captain Dave Ellison comments “we welcome Wem tomorrow night looking for another home win to get more points on the board. Wem have started indifferently losing their last home game but performing well away so we expect a tough game against our local rivals.” Wem will be wanting to keep their away form going to make up for their poor home start. The Bylet welcome Burway with both teams having experienced mixed results so far. However the Bylet are on a 11 match winning run at home, and will be desperate to keep that up. The reigning champions Castlefields are at home to Chester Road, looking to bounce back from that defeat at Burway last week. They will be back to full strength though this week, while the visitors come off an impressive win against Hanmer last week. St Georges have started well and sit in third as they travel to Meole Brace, who have beaten Castlefields at home and drawn against Wrockwardine Wood so far.
