Week 7 Review

Hanwood close to away win, Meole keep up form, Wem good away again

Hanwood came close to another away win as they lost out by 3 chalks at Hanmer with 7 winners in week 7 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League. Captain Ash Wellings said it was a “decent result for us overall but with how the game went there’s a slight frustration that we dipped out on the agg. Was a good game though and the Hanmer lads played well to get themselves back in the game after the good start we had.” Best winner was Phil Lyttle 5 while for the home side it was Martin Elson 9. Meole Brace kept up their good form with a 10-4 home win over Sir John Bayley. Skipper Andy Wigginton said it was a “really satisfying win against a strong Bayley team who we always have a good atmosphere with. Julian Cooke played his game of the century on front to beat Spencer Clarke (best winner 6) and from 2 each we took off and had a clean sweep in the middle with all 4 excellent. We then shared the back with Doug Edwards once again turning it on late in game to seal a super win. Considering the green has been bumping the lads have lost some home green advantage but have really knuckled down and got on with their bowls, so I’m a very happy non playing captain at the moment.” Opposition captain Chris Worthington was best winner 11. Wem USC continued their good away form with 5 winners at the Bylet. Captain Scott Thomas said “we were pleased with our points haul on Friday albeit slightly disappointed also, having been 3-1 up off the front. We were in a number of games throughout the night which we thought we could have come away with more.” Fred Bailey was their best winner, 17, with Dan Davies best winner 5 for the home side.

Castlefields have moved top with a 10-4 home win over St Georges. Mike Beer returned to form with a 21-1 victory, with Lewis Scott also maintaining his form winning 11. Newport have moved into 2nd place after beating Burway 11-3. Paul Reeves was their best winner 5 with Adam Dovey impressing for the visitors with his best win of 9. Wrockwardine Wood defeated Chester Road 10-4 despite having a few out on holiday. Andy Jones and Steve Bodley were best winners 13, while Paul Griffiths was the same for the away side by the same score.

Castlefields are three clear of Newport at the top, while Ifton are 7 points adrift at the bottom as their game with Highley was rained off. Paul Reeves is the only player to have won 7 out of 7.
