Newport earn away win, Wem shock Fields, Dragons slay Burway
Newport have gone top in week 8 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League after winning 12-4 at Chester Road. Captain Sam Millward said it was a “great result Friday, was looking for any win really for a good result but to come away with 8 winners is brilliant. Proud of everyone in my team everyone is getting on and there’s a great feeling in the team.” Best winner was Pete Cookson 4 with Mark Holland was best winner 11 for the home side as their poor start continued. They have gone above Castlefields now as they suffered a shock 9-5 loss at Wem USC. Skipper Scott Thomas said “we were pleased to get a win over the Champions and hope it can kick start our season. We now move onto another tough test at Newport on Friday!” Colin Smith was best winner 9 for them, with Mark Taylor best for the visitors 7 as they matched their loss their last season which kick started their 13 match unbeaten run. St Georges had a great 13-1 home win over Burway to keep their good start to the season up. Joint skipper Tony Rhodes commented on a “super performance with appreciative comments from Burway as to the display. We’ll stay in there fighting as long as we are able to.” Lewis Scott continued his great form with being best winner again with his 21-7 card, while Jolyon Partridge was the winner for the visitors 8.
Hanwood scored a very good 11-3 win over Meole Brace considering the visitors knowledge of the green. Colin Beaman was best winner 5 with Dave Redge best for the visitors 17. Sir John Bayley also scored the same win over Wrockwardine Wood with the returning Tom Roden best winner 5 and Jamie King, fresh off his holiday, best for the visitors 16. Hanmer will be happy with a 10-4 win over neighbours Ifton. Lee Peate was their best winner 4 with Ian Jones best for the visitors 12. Highley will also be delighted with their 9-5 win over neighbours Bylet after having so many players out. Dave East was best winner for them 4 with Gary Cooper the same for the away side.
Newport are 4 points ahead of three sides, St Georges, Sir John Bayley and Castlefields. Ifton are 7 behind Chester Road but with a game in hand. Callum Wraight has joined Paul Reeves on 7 wins as Paul was on holiday. Keith Wall has joined Paul on 7 consecutive wins.
