Week 9 Preview

Burway face Bayley test, Ifton aim to move closer to pack, Wrockites have Hanwood

Newport will look to keep top place with a win at home to Wem USC in week 9 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League. They are currently 3 clear at the top and will fancy their chances of a big home win against a team with a poor record on there. But Wem are made of sterner stuff away from home these days, and after their shock win over Castlefields will be full of confidence. The Fields are in joint second and are at home to new boys Highley. They know after their loss last week they have to bounce back well to keep close to the leaders. However Highley have done well away from home so far this season and will relish the trip. Sir John Bayley are level with the Champions but face a tough trip down to Burway. They won there last season though, after getting whitewashed there the season before. Burway haven’t had the best of starts to the season but joint captain Jesse James knows “we need to dust ourselves down after two difficult away games. I don’t think we have played badly in either game, we have just played two very good sides on good home greens. It doesn’t get any easier tomorrow night against another very good team in SJB. However, we are at home and we hope to continue our unbeaten home run so far this season.”

St Georges are in the gaggle of teams behind the leaders and will look to take advantage of a misfiring Chester Road team. They have done well so far with some excellent home wins, while the visitors have not got going at all yet and know if they don’t soon they will be in trouble. Hanwood are behind that gaggle and will want to match their seven winners at Wrockwardine Wood they got last season to stay up near the top. The home side have yet to fire on all cylinders and captain Rob Jones knows it is “a difficult game tomorrow night against a team who play a quick green very well. Hanwood are many people’s dark horses so we will need to be at it fro the off. Looking forward to it.” Ifton find themselves bottom but with a game in hand on the teams above. They travel to Meole Brace where in the past they have had a good record at, although mostly on the other green. Skipper Dickie Jones says “it is our sixth game away this season, our away form isn’t to bad, hopefully we will get 4 or 5 winners. Meole’s form at home is steady so it will be hard as all games are.” Bylet are on a 13 match unbeaten run at home and will look to stretch that at home to Hanmer. They won this fixture 14-0 last season but with the green being so bumpy and Hanmer having improved will be hard pressed to match that. Hammer will be happy with their start to the season and will want to continue their improvement in Bridgnorth
