Week 11 Preview

Newport face Hanwood test, Ifton & Highley in double header, Chester Road look to win again

Newport face another tough test as they take on Hanwood in week 11 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League. They come off the back of 4 winners last week, and will be eager to make up for that this week. Captain Sam Millward knows it is a “big game for us as we look to bounce back from last week’s 4 winners. Hanwood typically come and play the green well so we know it will be a tough game as always.” Hanwood come off a solid home result last week, as well as having 7 winners the week before at Wrockwardine Wood, and know a good result will keep them in touch with the top four. Castlefields will look to maintain top spot as they entertain a struggling Ifton side. The Fields earned a great win last week at Hanmer and will look to push on now ahead of the turnaround. Ifton lost at home to Bylet from 5-0 last week, and need a reaction to get a good result. They also play Highley on Saturday at 10, so will be looking to get off bottom spot at least. Skipper Dickie Jones says “we did well there last year all be it they had a few regulars out. At this moment 4 winners would be a good result. Saturday is a hard one to predict with Highley who haven’t seen our green before.” Highley have adapted well to the league but face two tough aways at St Georges and that game at Ifton. Captain Ben Dixon says “we are pretty full strength and will look to bounce back from the mid week cup loss to Hanwood which hurt a little.  We believe we will compete with St. Georges Friday, as a green we’ve probably played more then most greens in the prem. We then move onto Saturday with confidence as we’ve never been there could be interesting but we’re generally good on the road so will have a go. 10 points from the 2 game is our target.”

Chester Road got a good win last week against Burway at home and will need to be at their best to repeat that against Sir John Bayley who are doing well so far this season. Captain Paul Fowles says “another home game to carry on from last week. They are a good side and will be looking to win.” Burway know their home form must improve if they are to finish in the top half but take on a Wem USC side who drew there last season and are in good form again after a difficult start. Meole Brace and Bylet meet with both teams in decent form after some good away wins this season. Meole have had some close games at home but are still unbeaten there. Wrockwardine Wood have had a steady season so far and will look for a good win over Hanmer. But Hanmer have learnt from last season and are improving virtually every game, but will need to bounce back from their home defeat against Castlefields last week.
