Week 12 Preview

Newport & Field face tough trips, Bayley & Dragons clash, North Shropshire Derby

Leaders Newport face a tough trip to Hanmer in week 12 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League. They have had a good record there in the league, winning there last season 12-4 when the green was flying. They will know the weather has been much different the last week or so, and hope that doesn’t make too much of a difference. Hanmer lost their last home game against Castlefields, and captain Dave Ellison says “we entertain high flying Newport and having suffered defeat to them the last 2 season at Hanmer we know we are in for a tough examination. We need to get off to a good start which we didn’t have against Castlefields. We need home points on the board to survive in this league and Newport is a good test.” Castlefields face a tough trip themselves to Bylet, who are unbeaten in 14 home games, since their last defeat against the Fields by 1 chalk last season. There are doubts about the game with the green at Bylet saturated and rising river levels in the area. Skipper Scott Harries says “we want to keep our unbeaten home record going and get one over the champions for being the last team to beat us at home and to keep our push for the top half going.” The Fields sat out last week but won at Hanmer the week before, and want to make sure they keep Newport in their sights. The two other teams in the top four, Sir John Bayley and St Georges, meet in Wellington. St Georges captain Tony Rhodes knows it is a “tough game against quality opposition so points are a bonus.” The Bayley had a very good win against Newport last time out, and will want to at least match that this week.

There is a North Shropshire derby with Wem USC playing Chester Road. The Road won at Wem narrowly last season and would love a repeat, but their form has not been to good so far this season. Wem though have turned their home season around after losing their opening two there, winning their last three. Hanwood got 0 last week and will want to bounce back at home to Burway. Burway though had a good 10-4 win last week and know this week is a good one to go to the Cock Inn. Ifton lost at home to Highley on Saturday and know that visitors Wrockwardine Wood have a good record there, but they did beat them 12-2 last season and would dearly love a repeat given they are currently bottom of the table. The Wrockites have done good away including a draw at Meole Brace so far this season. Meole travel to Highley who will buoyed by that win last Saturday, and know that their home form has improved in every game so far this season. Meole though do win away from home, they have at Chester Road this season already.
