Week 14 Review

Ifton shock Newport, Dragons earn first away win, Wem improving

The bottom side shocked the top side as Ifton beat Newport 9-5 in week 14 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League. The result moved Ifton off bottom spot and gives them hope going into the second half of the season. Captain Dickie Jones was “happy with the win and the overall performance, Kev Nicholas played well in the front to win his game after being behind most of the game. Ian Dutton put in a great performance to win 21-8 (to be best winner) as did Leighton Roberts who won 21-9.” Newport captain Sam Millward was their best 9, as the leaders suffered a successive away defeat. St Georges are now just three behind them as they recorded their first away win of the season at Hanmer, winning 12-4. Skipper Tony Rhodes said it was a “fantastic all round performance on an incredibly difficult green. On and off the green we were good. Two 20 losers had leads as well so could have been better. Great hosts.” Martin Gaut continued his fine season being best winner 8, with Lee Peate best winner for the home side 15. Sir John Bayley lost ground as they had players missing in their 11-3 defeat at Wem USC, which continued Wem’s recent revival. Captain Scott Thomas said “we put in our best home performance of the season on Friday. From 1-12 everyone played the green well and we were pleased to continue our form from the County Cup game on Wednesday. Let’s hope we can maintain that form and climb the league!” Colin Smith was their best winner 5, while Paul Evans 14 was best for the away side.

Hanwood gained points as they beat Chester Road 12-2 and by over 100. Joint captain Mark Shore commented on a “great team performance on Friday. Darren Wellings bowled immaculate (to be best winner 1) as did Wayne Phillips whose opponent bowled much better than the scoreline suggests. Great battle from Colin Beaman also. Special mention though to our grounds man Roger Houston who has consistently prepared a fantastic bowling surface for the team. Friday was a fine example of this.” Gary Beff was best winner for the Road, who are now bottom and facing a battle to avoid that dreaded bottom spot. Castlefields also gained on the leaders with an 11-3 win over Meole Brace. Best winner for them was Rich Goddard 5 with Mark Thomas best for the visitors 10. Bylet continued their unbeaten run at home with a 9-5 win over Wrockwardine Wood. Rich Morris was best winner 9 while Jamie King was the same for the visitors. Burway managed seven winners at Highley but just dipped out on the aggregate. Captain Ben Allen said “our target away from home is to try and pick up 4 games. So this was a magnificent away performance in a game we thought we should have won. 5-3 up going into the back four we really fancied our chances. But with a couple of battling performances from their back four they just edged the shots in a very close game. All the winners were fantastic and I thought Harry Parsonage was very unlucky not to win his game as he played exceptionally well. Wayne Rogers was their best winner 9 while Mark Jones was best for the home side 4 as their home struggles continued.

Wrockwardine Wood beat Hanmer 10-4 in their rearranged game. Dan Bodley was best winner for them 6 with Mike Gilpin best for the visitors 8.

Newport are three ahead of St Georges, who are five in front of Sir John Bayley. Chester Road are now 6 points behind Ifton at the bottom.  Dave East still leads the League Averages and extended his Most Consecutive Wins to 11.
