Castlefields edged home a thriller against Newport to make the Semi Finals of the Barlows Fire & Security Alan Mayhew Trophy. It went all the way down to the last game, with Adam Jones playing Pete Farmer on Newport. Adam led 16-15 and had to score 19 to put the Fields through. He did more than that as he won 20. Skipper Alan Peach said it was a “great win on Wednesday. Both teams had players missing.we just got over the line. The home team did well to win by 34 and for 2 of our players to beat Pete Farmer and Phil Emery on their own green was brilliant. Well done team and especially Keith Walton and Adam Jones.” At Newport Keith was best winner 14 for the winners, while for the home side it was Josh Bradburn 5. Over at Castlefields and the home side had three single figure winners with Callum Wraight the best of them 6. Newport had two winners there, the best of those being Dave Rhodes 13. There was another close game as Highley beat Hanmer by 10 to continue their good run in their maiden campaign in this competition. It was their away team that did the job, just 5 days after getting hammered there, as they won there by 4. Danny Statham was the best of the three winners 15 as they kept it tight there, with Ieuan Pugh best winner 15 for the home side. At home it was Darrell Handley who won 8 in the back three to help overcome an early deficit after Mike Gilpin won 11 for the away side.
St Georges also had a close game with Wem USC, just winning by 9 overall. They had a 35 shot home win with Tony Rhodes the best winner 5, and Pete Bound the best of two winners there for the away side 17. Wem did a good job at home to win by 26 with 5 winners, the best being Craig Ashley 9. Former player Clay Flattley’s 19 win was crucial for the Dragons. Hanwood had the most comfortable win of the night when beating Wrockwardine Wood by 44. They won by 10 on Wrockwardine Wood with Phil Lyttle best winner 10 as the home’s best was only Ian Whitehouse and Martin Williams 17. Hanwood won by 34 at home with 5 winners, the best of those being Ash Wellings 8. Only Stuart Rutter won for the Wrockites 15.
