Week 24 Preview

Bayley last home games, Fields must win away, Fifth meets 3rd

League leaders Sir John Bayley have their last home game of the season in week 24 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League. They host rock bottom Chester Road, who did win there back in 2016, the year when Bayley won their one and only league title. The Bayley have been good at home this season, but haven’t won as well the last two home games that they would have wanted. They will be looking to gain on their main rivals Castlefields who travel to Ifton in their last away game of the season. They won there around this time last season to virtually seal their title, but know a loss tomorrow would most likely lose them the title. Skipper Alan Peach says “we are at Ifton this coming Friday, and its a very hard fixture. We really need to win to try put some pressure on the Bayley boys but Ifton will have other ideas. We did well here last season but it’s a different night etc.” Newport in 3rd would need three big wins to be able to win the league, but they’d do well to do so at Hanwood tonight. Hanwood have been in fine form, and still find themselves 5th, but will fancy catching Newport in 3rd with a good result tonight. Joint captain Mark Shore says it is a “big game against a quality team. We will be looking to close in on 3rd place with a good performance at home.” St Georges sandwich the two teams and will face a trip to the unknown in Highley. They are a few short with the Isle of Man but will still take a good team down the A442. Highley will be looking for a top half finish in their debut season and know two home wins should get them there. Joint skipper Ben Dixon says “we go into this weeks game a little bit disappointed with last weeks result at Wrockwardine, they battled well and for once we just didn’t have that killer instinct we have had away so many time this year. But our intentions are to bounce back this week but St. Georges are a top team with quality throughout and we will respect that but we have ambitions to make the pool A as something to aim for. It’s a big ask but I think this time of season it’s easy to be lazy and float through the last few games then end up finishing lower than we deserve, so it’s back to business and heads on again to show this league and opponents the respect it deserves and finish as high as we can.”

Hanmer know a win over Wrockwardine Wood will all but seal another season in the league. Their visitors though know they can’t afford to slip up if they are to hold onto 6th place. Bylet will look to build on their first win in 10 on Friday with another win at home to Meole Brace. Meole will want to bounce back from losing at home to Wem USC last Friday, and still know a top half finish is within reach with three good results. Wem will look to continue that winning run over Burway with both teams in with a real shout of a top half finish themselves.
