Dragons face leaders test, Fields must win big, Big battle for 7th

St Georges face league leaders Sir John Bayley in the penultimate week of action in the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowls League. The leaders Sir John Bayley are 18 points clear of 2nd placed Castlefields, and know they could win the title this week with a win there. But they have never won at St Georges, the only place in the league they haven’t, and have been unlucky there in the past. Dragons joint skipper Tony Rhodes says “what can you say really. Top of the table expecting and looking for another good away win. We have a good side out so once again I fully expect a positive performance and result.” St Georges are battling for 3rd themselves, they are level with Newport in 3rd at the moment. They will expect a big win from Newport against Hanmer, but Hanmer have been much better on the road already this season, having amassed more than 15 extra points away than last season. Hanwood are just a point behind the two teams in 5th, and will fancy a win at Burway who have been inconsistent at home this season, but still can get a top half finish. Castlefields should finish at least second, and will know that only two big home wins will give them any chance of winning the league this season. They host the Bylet, who have an outside chance of a top half finish still after their big win over Meole Brace last week.

Wrockwardine Wood have virtually wrapped up 6th place with their win on Monday, but still have a national final to get to in the Super Cup. Captain Rob Jones says “Ifton is our last home game before the final round of the Super Cup before the National Finals stage, so we will be looking to finish as strongly as possible ahead of an important final week.” Ifton are now safe but could still move up several places with two good results to end the season. Wem USC are targeting 7th again after winning their last three games, and travel to rock bottom Chester Road who will be confirmed for bottom place unless a miracle happens. Captain Scott Thomas says ” we are looking forward to taking on our local rivals this week. We hope to finish in the top half of the table again and know that a good result on Friday would go a long way to securing that for us. It’s always a good game, played with plenty of banter between the two teams. We just hope we can come away with a good haul.” Highley were in 7th but dropped down a place after a home loss last week, but know a win at Meole Brace could put them back in pole position. Meole though have got a chance themselves of a top half place so will want a good home win ahead of travelling next week.
