Week 25 Review

Bayley take firm grip, Chester Road still alive, Battle for 7th intensifies

Sir John Bayley have taken a firm grip on the 2019 Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League in Gameweek 25 after getting 5 points at St Georges. Spencer Clarke was best winner 11, while Pete Grimston was best 10 for the home side, who won by just 5 chalks. Castlefields beat Bylet 11-3 to keep their slender hopes alive, Callum Wraight leading the way 2, with Nick Lewis best winner for the away side 13. Newport stole a march on St Georges for 3rd place with a 11-3 home win over Hanmer. Phil Emery led the way 7 with Mike Gilpin replying 21-11 for the visitors. Hanwood though lost ground on the top four with a 10-4 loss at Burway. Wayne Phillips was best winner for them 5, as the home side had Kev Dovey and Ben Allen their best winners 8.

That win means Burway move up to 7th as Wem USC lost 11-3 at bottom placed Chester Road. Captain Paul Fowles says “we played well. We are now gearing ourselves for the play off game. It was nice to have a full team on Friday for the first time in weeks, it showed in the result we got.” Ian McDonald was best winner 5, with Pete Bound best for the visitors 12. Wrockwardine Wood have sealed 6th after beating Ifton 12-2. Skipper Rob Jones said it was “an excellent team performance from the lads against a decent Ifton team. All sections played very well and we were good value for the big win.” Midland Masters winner Jamie King warmed up for it by being best winner 6, while Jay Salisbury was best for the away side 11. Meole Brace gave themselves an outside chance of a top half finish with a 11-3 win over Highley. Captain Andy Wigginton said it was “a very much needed win for us as our last month has been disappointing and once again Meole have collapsed at the back end of the season after a promising two thirds of it. Highley played ok and probably could have pinched 2 or 3 more games so only to have 3 losers was pleasing. A few lads have been struggling to win lately managed to get 21 which made the camp a happier one. No real standout performances just most of the lads playing decent stuff!” Will Tarrell was their best winner 8, with Dave East best for the visitors 18.

Sir John Bayley lead by 12 to Castlefields, while Chester Road are 14 adrift of Ifton at the bottom. Scott Simpson has won the Most Consecutive Wins after winning his 15th straight match, and just needs to win on Friday to win the League Averages. But Pete Cookson and Lewis Scott could take advantage if he loses.
