On This Day: 21st September 2019

On this day last year Castlefields won an 8th Barlows Fire & Security Alan Mayhew Trophy after beating St Georges by 58 on Chester Road. It wasn’t as comfortable as the scoreline suggests, as they only led by 7 after a shared first four. It could have been much less if Keith Wall hadn’t come back from 9-0 and 19-12 down to get 19, while Keith Walton was 9-4 down and got back to 17 against late call up Phil Jones, who was that impressive he earned the “Mark Burroughs” man of the match trophy. Mike Beer was 14-3 up over Pete Grimston after being exceptional in the corners, but Pete dug deep to get back to 14. Glyn Herbert had a close game with Clay Flattley, before running out from 14 across. This meant Castlefields led by 8.

Into the middle and Andy Judson and Dave King had a close game with both having runs with the block. Callum Wraight was at his consistent best, playing his trademark 19m marks well and firing anything off that Andy Morgan put up, and won 7 to give Castlefields a firm grip of the game. Mike Wainwright had an early lead over Martin Codd but Martin had the better of the second half to win 14. Andy defeated Dave 19, while Ian Gaut and Adie Rowe had a close game throughout, with Adie getting back to 19 from 20-15 down. After eight games, Castlefields led by 29.

Paul Williams then sealed the win, beating Tony Rhodes 10 after playing very well. Mark Taylor then added another 10 card against the luckless Paul Beer, and Rich Goddard defeated Martin Gaut 8 in the corners. Lewis Scott was the best winner for the Dragons, beating Adam Jones 15 in a good quality game.

Commiserations to St Georges, it was their first ever final defeat in the Alan Mayhew Trophy after winning all 6 finals previous, while Castlefields extend their record to 8 wins. Well done to the Fields.
