Best of the Playoffs: 2000 Final

With the Play off having been this Friday, we look back at four of the best Play off finals that we have seen in the league on the first Friday of October. We will then have a vote to decide which was the best ever.

The first Play off final classic was only the second one ever played, and saw the Play offs come to the forefront of the bowling world with over 300 at Donnington Wood to see Ford play Ifton. A match report with scores is below.

In an unbelievably tense match tonight, Ifton retained their Premier league status with a narrow 5 chalk win over Shrewsbury League Champions Ford. A crowd, well in excess of 300, saw some nervous bowling throughout the match and Ifton were given a perfect start when the first two games off the green gave them a 20 chalk lead with Dave Jones recovering from 9-2 down to win 21-13 and Dave “Rocky” Jones beating Fords passionate captain, Paul Middleton 21-9. Wayne Phillips cut the deficit to 9 when he won 21-10, but the lead was increased to 15, when Brian Hayes won 21-15. Ford then responded with three winners in the middle, but only managed to cut the deficit to 10 with the final 4 games to play. The crowd noise continued to increase throughout the back four and with Ford leading in 3 games, their dream of playing in the Premier League was close to reality, but all the Ifton players clawed their way back into their games and they only dropped 6 chalks to win by 5 overall.

Ford more than proved themselves on the night capable of playing in the Premier League and with seven individual winners on the night will count themselves “unlucky”, but losing captain Paul Middleton said that they will be stronger for the experience and will be back next season.

Winning captain, Terry Williams is looking forward to next season and does not want to go through the “relegation” playoff again next year. He hopes they will be stronger next season and not be involved in the “basement” battle.
