Phil Clinton, who played for Castlefields last season and previously for Hadley USC and St Georges, was part of the King George V side who won the BCGBA World Team Championships this season. They beat Thongsbridge by 30 in the final, Phil winning 11 at number 8 to seal victory, but it was Paul Ward’s 21-2 win that was the main difference. King George V had beaten Newdigate in an all Midland Semi Final by 33 with 5 winners, Paul the best again winning 10 with Phil also helping with a 12 card. Thongsbridge had beaten last year’s winners Parkfield Labour by 16 in their Semi Final. King George V’s closest call was the first round, as they only beat Lloyds Hotel by 5, Phil Clinton holding his nerve last on to win 18 to claim victory. Sir John Bayley’s Ant Bracken was a 7 winner for the Greville Arms in their first round clash against Parkfield but the team lost out by 10 overall.
Well done to Phil Clinton and the team for their success.
