Hanmer surprise Meole, Bylet earn good home win, Bayley keep pressure up
Hanmer pulled off one of the surprise results of the 2017 Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League as they won at Meole Brace in Gameweek 19. It was Meole’s first home defeat of the season and it was a timely boost for Hanmer as they aim to avoid bottom spot. Captain Dave Ellison commented “Friday saw us gain our second away victory of the season at Meole Brace in very conditions which possibly suited us more. Stand out performances from Gary Whitehall (best winner 8) and Robin Bennett saw us gain the aggregate by 2 shots and a vital extra two points.” Colin Beaman was best winner for the home side 7. Bylet also earned a good home win given the conditions winning 10-4 against Hanwood. Jason Groom led the way once again winning 7 with Danny Wornell the best for the Shrewsbury side 10. Wem USC got a vital home win but Ifton skipper Dickie Jones was “happy with 5 winners.” Two 8 wins by Paul Gleave and Chris Brettell helped seal the aggregate for the home side while Leighton Roberts was best for the visitors.
Chester Road had 6 single figure winners against Newport but only managed one more other winner in a 9-5 victory. Martin Lloyd was best of those winning 6 while for the visitors it was Mark Selley’s 10 win. Sir John Bayley kept up the pressure on the league leaders Castlefields as a 12-2 home win over Burway closed the gap to 6 points. Scott Simpson was their best winning 6 while Kevin Dovey was best for the visitors winning 9 Bayley skipper Tom Roden commented “Another great result for us against a good team, it keeps us in touching distance of Castlefields.”
The other two games, Castlefields against Bowring and Wrockwardine Wood versus St Georges were called off.
Castlefields lead by 6 points to Sir John Bayley while Ifton are 7 adrift of Hanmer, Wem USC and Bylet. Callum leads the League Averages on 15 wins still with 5 other on the same number of wins.
