Castlefields seal title, St Georges snatch 4th, Hanmer earn last money

Castlefields sealed the 2017 Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League by getting 6 points at Chester Road. They only dipped out of the aggregate by 4 points despite captain Andy Duckett capping off a fine season for him by winning 9, but Martin Lloyd’s best win of 8 for the home side helped them end their season with an 8-6 win. Sir John Bayley made it respectable by beating Meole Brace 14-0 to close the gap to just 5 points. They took advantage of a poor Meole side to win by 133, just 5 chalks short of matching the biggest ever home win in the league. Late call-up Ant Bracken and Chris Ward both won 3, with Nige Bound getting the closest scoring 20.

St Georges snatched 4th place from under Bowring’s nose after they beat them 12-2, to finish two points ahead of them. Ian Gaut led the way winning 4 with only home member Josh Bradburn and his dad Roy winning, both 14. Hanwood finished 6th with an 11-3 win home victory over Burway, finishing just a point behind Bowring. Glyn Wellings was best for them winning 10, with Russ Davies top card for the Ludlow side 6, who finish 9th as Wrockwardine Wood overtook them with a 9-5 win against Ifton. It was Iton’s being ever result there, with Dave Bond the best for them winning 10, with home captain Rob Jones responding with his 9 card.

Hanmer held onto 10th place and the last Prize Money in the league with getting 3 at Newport, despite having two 20 losers and a 19. Robin Bennett was the best of their 3 winning 9, with Russ Pegram, Stephen Handley and Alan Davidson the best card of 12 for the home side who finished 3rd. They didn’t quite win the Most Improved Team though with Bylet sealing their best ever points total with 163 to with a 12-2 win over rock bottom Wem USC. Jamie Taylor and Rob Steventon were their best winning 5, while Barrie Thomas was the best for their visitors 15 who will need to pick themselves up ahead of the Playoff final.

So Castlefields win the league by 5 points, with Newport finishing in 3rd and St Georges 4th. At the bottom and Wem USC ended up 24 points behind Ifton.

Pete Farmer won the League Averages for the third time with a 21-13 win for his 14th consecutive win to win that award to.
