2017 Winners: Barlows Fire & Security Alan Mayhew Trophy – Hanwood

Hanwood have made history by winning their first ever Premier League Trophy this season in the Barlows Fire & Security Alan Mayhew Trophy. They beat Wem USC by 33 in the 1st game, Dave Burton their best card at home winning 5 in a 33 shot win. Away and Glyn Wellings winning 6 helped to hold Wem to just a 12 chalk win, meaning a 21 shot win overall. They then faced Bylet and earned a 48 shot win at home, Tony Hotchkiss the leading card 21-4 in a full house, while away they had three winners in a drawn leg, Dave Payne and Phil Lyttle both winning 15. In the Semi Finals and they faced a tough task against league leaders Castlefields. They played the home leg first and won by 31 overall, Tony Hotchkiss and Dave Payne leading the way winning 13 in another full house. But this was wiped out in the first three at Castlefields as they trailed by 2 overall. But the back three did an unbelievable job, Greg Smith winning 7 from 7-5 up, Phil Lyttle being 10-9 up and running out, and Mark Shore 12-4 up with the job done for the team, and went onto win 9 for a 5 chalk win there. In the final they beat Meole Brace by 55. It was a close start though with it being level after the first four. This was mainly because Meole had fought back with Will Tarrell winning 12 from 11 4 down in the corners  and Colin Beaman winning 17 from 12 4 behind in one of the best games of the night. But with Ash Wellings winning 11 and Nick Davies 18 it meant it was looking like a close game.

Into the middle and Hanwood took control. Greg Smith won 11 in the corners before Jon Mansell had resisted a fight back from Scott Moseley to run out from 15 across. Dave Payne then fought back excellently over the middle from 15 8 down to win 17, and with Dave Burton winning 9 on the longer marks it was a 31 shot lead for Hanwood.

Hanwood were comfortable in the back despite Mark Thomas leading 15 5 and when Glyn Wellings beat his brother 11 it was game over. Mark Shore put the icing on the cake with a faultless performance winning 2 on a falling mark to win the man of the match award. Mark Thomas came off winning 14 before Danny Wornell just got past Dave Redge 19 to give Hanwood a 55 shot win.

The league would like to say well done to Hanwood on winning their first ever league trophy and commiserations to Meole Brace on not being able to defend it.

Thank you to Old Shrewsbury for hosting the game so well and for doing a great buffet. Also thanks to Mike Potter for refereeing the game in his usual high standards.
