Newport keep up form, Ifton get vital win, Bylet beat Wem
Newport kept up their form in Gameweek 9 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League as they defeated champions Castlefields 10-4. It was a great result considering “the green was underwater at 5.30. We were class on what was a heavy green and level off the first four on games and agg so chuffed to bits with the end result to have the next 6 out of 8 winners.”Peter Farmer was best winner 9 for them while Mike Beer was best for Fields 13. Sir John Bayley beat Wrockwardine Wood 9-5 despite having 4 regulars out. Tom Roden and Ant Bracken were both best winners 7, with former Dennis Lewis Open winner Stuart Rutter continuing his love affair on the green with a 5 win. Hanwood have joined Sir John Bayley and Castlefields on 77 points with a 11-3 win over Burway. Darren Wellings won 3 to be best winner for the home side, while Nick Lewis was best for the Ludlow club, 12.
Ifton got a vital win to move off the bottom with a 10-4 result over Hanmer, which puts their opposition in bottom place now. Captain Dickie Jones commented “the 10-4 win was a fair result overall would have been nice to have got one more though. Leighton Roberts played well to win the sweep 21-4, while Craig Griffiths was involved in a good game with Dave Ellison to win 18 and keep his good run doing. Dave Bond and Martin Jones both played well to win their games.” Hanmer had three 17 winners, Craig Jones, Graham Bennett and Martin Elson. Bylet enjoyed a return to form at home as they beat Wem USC 11-3. Skipper Scott Harries was “very happy with the teams performance, we’ve been just dipping out the last few weeks so I feel we got our just desserts as a result like that has been coming the way we’ve been playing! We just about missed all the rain and the green played very well and was very tricky through the brown and green! We won each four 3-1 but a rally in the middle from Wem looked like it could’ve gone 4-4 but my guys dug in very well to grind it out! A special mention to Jamie Taylor, he was superb in beating Derek Wright in a great battle which was for me game of the night!” Rich Morris was best winner 8, while Chris Brettell won 10 for the visitors.
Bowring earned themselves another good away result with 5 winners at Meole Brace. Skipper Rich Lawson said “it was another good away performance i thought from us and another nearly result, 5-3 up after 8 games and we were looking for that away win, but there back 4 played extremely well, especially Doug Edwards to beat Roy Bradburn in what I thought was the pick of the games, I thought the green ran ok too considering the amount of rain that came down a couple of hours before the start, so well done Meole in getting the game on.” Nige Bound was best winner 6 for the home side, while Ayden Smith was best for the Telford side 11. Chester Road beat St Georges 8-6 as they still search for their first big home win of the season. Les Markham was best winner 7 with Clay Flattley replying for the visitors 10, who earned another good away result.
Newport are now 13 points clear of Wrockwardine Wood. Hanmer are bottom by two points by Ifton. There are three players still unbeaten from 9, with Pete Farmer still clear on aggregate.
