Newport & Bayley face tough trips north, Hanmer accept fate, Fields look to go top

Newport and Sir John Bayley face tough trips north in Gameweek 21 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League. Newport travel to Ifton who have picked up in recent weeks and now looking for a top half finish. Ifton skipper Dickie Jones says “we are expecting a tough match against a team who have been top of the league for the most of the season, so would be happy with any kind of win.” Sir John Bayley are in 3rd and also face a tough trip to Hanmer because of the unfamiliarity of the green. They got 6 winners there last season after a poor start so will be hoping that little more green knowledge will make them start better. Hanmer are adrift at the bottom now, and captain Dave Ellison says “we have accepted our fate now and Susan Boyle has got warmed up. We face the Bayley, the County Cup champions, so what a better time to play them! Seriously we will still fight for every point and will carry on blooding the young players in and giving them experience and we could have a say in who wins the league with our remaining fixtures so that is interesting.” Castlefields are at home and play Bylet, and given they are joint leaders with Newport, will be looking to go top for the first time in a long time. Bylet though are in excellent form, whitewashing for the first time in the league last week, and won’t be phased by the trip to Queen Street. Hanwood, in 4th, face a trip as well to Wem USC. Hanwood will be hoping they can catch the top three but know they will probably need an away win or two to do so. Wem USC will be buoyant after last week’s amazing win at Meole Brace. Captain Scott Thomas comments “we are looking forward to the challenge that Hanwood bring tomorrow. They are packed with good players across the board, but we hope to carry our away form into our home matches. Should be a good game!”

Bowring and Chester Road find themselves in the unfamiliar place of 12th and 13th at the moment, and both teams will be looking to move up the table as they meet on Haygate Road. Both teams have been up and down, Chester Road winning two away games recently, while Bowring also won away recently but have lost at home two out of the last three games. Wrockwardine Wood are back in good form now, and will want to take advantage of a Meole Brace side reeling from last week’s home loss. Meole though have done well away this season, winning three of their games, and have been good at bouncing back so far this season. St Georges will look for another good home win like last time out as they chase the top five. They host Burway, who haven’t won in their last four games, and will be desperate to get a good points haul to keep their chances of a top half finish alive.
