Gameweek 22 Preview

Four of top five clash, Newport look to take advantage, Bowring look to build

Four of the top five clash in Gameweek 22 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League as the race at the top hots up. New leaders Castlefields are on an unbeaten eight game run and travel to 3rd placed Sir John Bayley in what promises to be a cracking atmosphere. The Bayley are 10 behind the Fields so need a good win to haul them in, so Fields skipper Alan Peach knows “if we were to win there then it would really dent their championship hopes. If you get 5 away from home you have done a job and if we can get that we will be happy. Of course our players want to win. But we are going to a club with top players so we’ll see on the night. I’m happy with our form and have to keep giving it 100%” The game last season ended 7-7, with the Bayley fighting back from 6-0 down, so will be wanting a much faster start this time round. Fifth meets fourth as Hanwood host Wrockwardine Wood, with both teams still eyeing a top three finish. Joint Hanwood skipper Mark Shore knows it’s a “big game tomorrow against a good Wrockwardine Wood team who have had a great season. We will obviously be looking for a good home win to take back 4th place and try close the gap on the top 3.” 2nd placed Newport take on rock bottom Hanmer looking for a big win to take advantage of the Bayley and Castlefields game. Skipper Sam Millward comments “the best result would be a Bayley win but that it is a very close one. We’re taking it week by week and we have to get a good home result to set us up for going to Castlefields next week. We believe we can do well there.” Hanmer meanwhile had a good win last week, but know they may do well to avoid another whitewash like they did in their last away game.

Bylet were the team that gave them that whitewash two weeks ago but know it will be much tougher against a Bowring side with a lot more green knowledge. Bowring skipper Rich Lawson knows it is “ yet another tough game, Bylet are playing extremely well at home this season. But our form has been quite consistent recently and we’ll go there hoping to pick up some useful away points. I always set a bench mark of trying to get at least 4 winners and anything after that is a bonus.” Ifton host Wem USC with a point separating the teams in 7th and 8th. Ifton have picked up well the latter part of the season and a top half finish would mean progress from last season. Wem have put behind them the troubles of last season by being excellent away from home all season, including a staggering 13-3 win last away game, following 7 winners the week before. St Georges still have hopes of a top four finish but will need a positive result at Meole Brace to achieve that. Meole recovered well from that 13-3 defeat last home game by getting 5 at Wrockwardine last week, and will want to keep that bounce back ability going. Chester Road host Burway with both teams in a disappointing 13th and 12th place respectively, and wanting a good end to the season to move them up to where they wanted to at the start of the season.
