In a night of high drama in Telford, Donnington Wood have beaten Chester Road by the closest of margins and needed Mark Williams to run out from 19-13 down to win the match.In Whitchurch, Chester Road won the home leg by 32 with Rod Manley the home sides best winner at 21-11 and with Mark Selley the sole Donnington Wood winner at 21-19. Chris Lodge who got beat 21-15, proved to be valuable card for Donnington as he was 14-2 down in his game.

At Donnington Wood, on a quick green, Chris Worthington 21-8, Roy Bradburn 21-7 Martin Boyd 21-13 were the best winners bur it was Mark Williams who became the home sides hero as he was 19-13 down against Martin Lloyd but ran out to win 21-19 and clinch a place for Donnington Wood in this years final which will now be played in Telford. Charlie Weaver 21-12 was the best winner for Chester Road.

A big home win of 60 set last years winners St Georges up for a comfortable win against Newport. St Georges captain Mick Jones 21-4 was the best home card whilst Ian Whittington also won by the same score at Newport, but with three away winners they St Georges 6 kept the losing margin to 11 chalks and take the tie by 49 overall.

St Georges won the Alan Mayhew trophy for the third time tonight.  They were never behind after Man of the Match Andrew Jones won 21-5 in the first four and after leading the first four by 19, Number 5, Chris Ball was 17-5 up the match was nearly over but Donnington Rallied strongly and Alan Meredith fought back well and at 19-20 was one on for 20 across but Chris struck and removed his own bowl to leave Alan with 2 and a 21-20 winner.  With Paul Reeves 14-8 up and captain Dave Rhodes creating a big lead against Dave King the fight back was well and truly on.  Dave Rhodes won 21-9 but Ian Gaut recovered to win 21-16 and that left St Georges well in front by 24 after 8, after Tony Rhodes recovering some of his old form to win 21-8.

St Georges captain Mick Jones, found his length straight away and was a comfortable 21-5 winner and with all winners in the back for St Georges the final score was 235-179 but it could have been a different story.  League Chairman John Nash thanked the Bowring for their facilities and a very quick green and also praised referee Mike Potter and his measurers. Alan Mayhew was then on hand to present the winning captain Mick Jones with his trophy.

A torrential thunderstorm has forced the postponement of tonight’s Alan Mayhew Trophy Final. As both teams arrived the rain started and whilst it abated an hour later, the decision was made to try again on Wednesday 13th July.  Pictured below is a lonely jack!!!!

The final of the Alan Mayhew Trophy between St Georges and local rivals Donnington Wood will be held on Wednesday 29th June at The Bowring, Wellington (Old green) commencing at 7.00 pm. The referee will be Mike Potter.

St Georges, entered the competition at the preliminary round stage and beat Ifton comfortably. In the quarter final, they defeated Sir John Bayley by 47 shots overall. In the semi final they defeated Newport by 49 shots, with all six winners at home giving them the edge.

 

Donnington Wood , entered the competition at the quarter final stage and beat Craven Arms by 59 chalks. In the semi final, they defeated current league pacesetters Chester Road by the narrow margin of 1 shot.
