Stuart Rutter and Dan Taylor retained their KGJ Insurance Mike Hinton Pairs title at Battlefield, becoming the first pair to ever to do so and take home the £200 first prize. They did it the hard way in the final, the Wrockwardine Wood pairing coming back from 16-8 and 17-13 down against Dave Rhodes of Newport and St Georges’ Pete Grimston to win 20. Dan and Stuart defeated Chris Stretch from Chester Road and Wem USC’s Carl Preece 12, converting a 14-4 lead into a 12 win. Dave and Pete defeated the 2016 winners Josh Bradburn of Bowring and Stuart Clee from Wrockwardine Wood 10, a break of 7 from 7-6 down helping them pull clear before a full house to win.
In the Quarter Finals:
- Chris and Carl came back from 9-8 down to record a break of 11 and win 11 against the Castlefields pair Keith Wall and Andy Duckett.
- Dan and Stuart beat Derek Wright and Pete Bound of Wem USC 11, going from 9-4 down to 17-9 up.
- Dave and Pete got past Connor and Gary Whitehall of Wem USC and Hanmer in a close game 19.
- Josh and Stuart raced 18-5 up on the Newport pair Mick Jones and Tom Langford, before holding off a fightback as they got back to 18-13, to win 15.
In the one prelim tie, Martin Gaut and Roy Bradburn raced 10-2 up in just four ends, before Keith and Andy nibbled at their lead and then led 20-17, before Martin and Roy got back to 20, however couldn’t finish it off.
The league would like to congratulate Stuart and Dan on their success.
