The 25 Years Anniversary Competition takes place at Donnington Wood tomorrow with the league eager to celebrate its 25th birthday with a feast of bowling. There are many star names in the field that have won trophies over the years in the league, as well as those who are leading player for their club and those in the top 100 of the all time averages. Amongst them are our five hall of famers and some of our life members too. Pete Farmer is top of our all time averages and will be expected to go far on a green he loves, he won their open here when it ran. But he faces young gun Josh Bradburn, who has won our Merit and used to play on these greens. Colin Beaman is another of our hall of famers and plays Tim Ealey first up, while Tony Rhodes has Ifton captain Dickie Jones for starters. Rich Goddard takes on Wrockwardine Wood stalwart Allan Gaut, with Allan hoping to roll back the years when he played here. Andy Moss has won our League Averages four times and has a very tasty tie with Pete Grimston first round, Pete another former Donnington lad. The draw is littered with former home players. Pete’s brother James has a long trip down from his home in North Lancs & Fylde and plays another former homester in Phil King. Rob Roden started his bowls career on these greens, but faces a tough tie with Callum Wraight first game, Callum having used to play on the new green for a season in 2011. Our life members Pete Roden and Andy Stevens grew up on these greens too and play Alan Jones and Nicky Jones first round, Alan having been our first ever League Averages winner. Two former home players collide as Dave Rhodes takes on Rich Lawson in what promises to be a great game, while Roy Bradburn won our League Merit on the new green, and plays Glyn Herbert first round. Clay Flattley had a season at Donnington over 20 years ago, so may not have too much green knowledge as he takes on former team mate Andy Judson. Dave King also played over 15 years ago here and takes on new Newport signing Stuart Clee. John Breeze is another who played there and despite not playing over the last few years, apart from Monday nights in the Mid Shropshire League, is still a force to be reckoned with and takes on Dale Rudrum, who has returned to form over the last couple of seasons.<\/p>\n
Our league officials take part with League Secretary Martin Gaut playing Steve Burroughs, who now plays up in the Stockport area, while League Chairman Mark Shore takes on Adie Rowe. League President Mick Jones hopes to roll back the years against Dale Downes, our former League Merit winner, while our SCGBA delegate John Nash plays Dale’s Wrockwardine Wood team mate Martin Williams. There are some same club matches as Wrockwardine Wood pair Rob Jones and Dan Taylor square up, and Castlefields duo Paul Williams and Keith Wall in what promises to be a tough tie for both. Keith Walton has played the most games in the league and has former League Treasurer Phil Talbot first round. Stuart Rutter won the League Merit on the new green last season, and hopes to add another trophy on there as he plays Paul Latham. Derek Wright has plenty of experience as he plays Matt Ealey, with Martin Lloyd another experienced campaigner and now takes on Sam Millward, the Newport captain. Hanmer now has a representative as Rich Pullen plays Phil Emery, meaning all 14 clubs from the 25th season are represented. Wayne Phillips has plenty of experience in these competitions, and has Pete Griffiths first game, who after a year out with injury is hoping to be back playing this season. Ex St Georges players Scott Harries and Tom Langford clash, with Andy Duckett and Glyn Wellings also taking each other on in what promises to be a close game. Glyn’s brother Darren Wellings takes on his former Meole Brace captain Mark Thomas, while Mark’s team mate Bill Tarrell plays Kiah Roberts. New Bylet signing Nick Lewis is a late change and plays Fred Bailey of Wem USC who is back full time this season, while Fred’s team mate Graham Dulson plays Nigel Bound.<\/p>\n
