Fields whitewash, Highley earn first win, Bylet survive scare, Hanmer win big<\/strong><\/p>\n

Castlefields earned the first whitewash of the season as they beat Chester Road in week 5 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League. It was a perfect response to their loss last week at Burway, and a perfect pick up for captain Alan Peach. Vice-captain Graham Rogers commented “after last Friday’s result at Burway it was important to bounce back with a result against Chester Road. We had a full squad to pick from unlike last week which helped us right from the off our lads got their heads down with Keith Wall (best winner 4) and Mike Beer recording single figure wins in the first four. Onto the middle four and another full house with three more single figure cards with Callum Wraight being the best winner. Onto the back four and Andy Judson continued his good early season form with a single figure card. Andy Duckett came in with a single figure also and with Rich Goddard winning meant we had eleven winners with Adam Jones left on against Andy Moss. This game was close all the way through and went right to the wire until Adam got over the line 21-20 to give us a full house and agg of 135. All in all a very pleasing night. On another note this result will put a smile on our captain’s face who has spent a few weeks in hospital after undergoing an emergency operation, and now thankfully is on the mend.”<\/p>\n

Highley recorded their first ever home win in the league with a 9-5 success over Hanwood. Joint skipper Ben Dixon said “we had raced 4-0 up but they could have quiet easily won it at the end if it wasn’t for a proper battling back from Danny Statham who was 19-7 down and Stu Gittings. But two good cards from Ray Bishop and a top performance from Mark Jones (best winner 7) put the game out of sight when we needed it.” Best winner for the visitors was joint captain Mark Shore 11. Bylet also won 9-5 at home to Burway, but only just! Skipper Scott Harries admitted that “I am one relieved and happy captain. Firstly we extended our winning home run to 12 games and secondly my lads showed a never say die attitude in winning the match. On a green that won’t allow you to play bowls on due to the condition of it, we got out of jail massively. I’m pretty sure Burway will still be thinking now how they didn’t win 12-4 as we won three 21-20 matches and we had lads well down and scramble to good scores to get us over the line by one chalk. Disappointed in our green as it’s the total opposite to last year but we just have to keep going, we’ve had a real steady start and know we can cause anyone problems on our day. Lastly credit to Burway, they just got on with it, didn’t let the green affect them and got behind there boys all the way to the end so all the best to them for the rest of the season.” Matt Ealey was best winner for them 10, with Pete Griffiths best for the visitors by the same score.<\/p>\n

Hanmer had a big home win 11-3 over Wem USC, who are still looking for their first win of the season. Skipper Dave Ellison said “the first 4 could of gone any way with 3 games 16 across but we managed to pick up 3 winners to set the tone for the night. The middle 4 games all went our way with single figure cards. Ieuan Pugh particularly impressive winning to 5 in 16 ends (to be best winner).\u00a0The back 4 saw us pick up another 2 points and so nearly all 4 with a 19 and 20 loser. Overall one of our best performances in the Prem.” Wem’s best winner was Paul Gleave 16. Meole Brace had another close match at home as they beat St Georges by 4 chalks. Doug Edwards was best winner 6, while Martin Gaut kept up his impressive form for the Dragons being their best winner 10. Wrockwardine Wood got their second draw in as many games as they held Newport at home. Newport skipper Sam Millward said “both teams will be disappointed not to win the game but our best result there for a fair few years, Dave Rhodes being 12-0 down scrambled to 14 to get the draw for us. On to the next one.” Best winner for the home side was Dan Taylor, Jamie King and Stuart Rutter, all 7, while for the former champions it was Pete Cookson 8. Ifton handed Sir John Bayley their first defeat of the season as they won 9-5. Martin Jones was their best winner 10, with Spencer Clarke and Alex Jones best for the visitors 15.<\/p>\n

Sir John Bayley remain top by two points to Newport, with Castlefields a further two behind and St Georges another two back. The four meet each other next week. Ifton are still bottom, two points behind Wem USC and another two adrift of Highley. Pete Farmer leads the League Averages as he won another Player of the Month award, with 8 players still being 100%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
