After what seemed like months of rain, the sun shone brightly in Ludlow as Burway Bowling Club hosted the 2024 running of the Burway Open. Although full in the run up to the competition, 8 players withdraw in the days beforehand so only 56 players took part but it was stacked with quality bowlers from all over the country. Surprisingly, a lot of county bowlers didn’t make it past the second round with the likes of Stuart Rutter, Wayne Rogers, Gary Neal and Spencer Clarke all falling by the wayside which highlighted the calibre of players on show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The quarter finals were all close games with Dan Taylor losing to 19, Sam Millward to 18, Scott Harries to 20 and Jamie King to 15 in games which were laden with good action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Semi final number 1 was an intriguing match between Merseyside’s Matt Gilmore and Shropshire’s star Callum Wraight. Gilmore hit the ground running as he flew into leads of 6 – 0 and 10 – 1 and had Wraight in deep trouble. Wraight won the block back and turned the tables to soon lead 12 – 10 six ends later and was soon in dominant mood as he kept scoring two’s to run out a comfortable 21 – 12 winner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Semi final number two was between St George’s Peter Farmer and Castlefields Ash Wellings. Wellings had got his moneys worth in his run to the semis by winning three of his four previous matches 21 – 20 so had spent a lot of time on the greens in doing so. Those previous exertions may have took it out of Wellings as he found himself 10 – 2 down after 9 ends. He was bowling well but when Farmer had to find a winning shot, he kept finding one when he needed to. The nearest Wellings got it back to was 15 – 10 but Farmer only needed four more ends to score a 21 – 10 victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The final looked a cracker on paper and with Wraight being a five time winner of the competition and Farmer having won the trophy three times previously which meant both had a good understanding of the green. It was Wraight who started brightly and took leads of 7 – 2 and 9 – 4. Farmer fired back though to take a lead of 13 – 11 and looked in good nick. This kicked Wraight into action though and he fought back to lead 17 – 14 and 20 – 16 and despite a brief rally from Farmer, Wraight scored the winning shot to win 21 – 18 and be win the coveted trophy and \u00a3500 first prize for a sixth time. The victory capped a brilliant week for Wraight who became a father for the third time earlier in the week as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Burway Bowling Club would like to thank its three sponsors of the competition which were Ludlow Motors, Prestige Plumbing and Heating and Black Sheep Scaffolding who’s generous sponsorship allowed the club to offer fantastic prize money. Thanks to all players and supporters who came down to watch with many staying to the end to watch the action. Thanks to all who marked cards and taped ends throughout the day. Thanks to Joe Morris for the fantastic hot food he laid on and to Viv Cooper for the delicious cakes she made. Finally, a huge thanks to our Greenkeeper, Andrew Stewardson, for producing two greens of high quality that led to a fantastic day of bowls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
