Bowring Stun Champions, Castlefields survive scare and Meole win big away<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was a remarkable night of bowls in the Flowfit Shropshire Premier League tonight. Newport started their season tonight but were stunned by Bowring as they were beaten 10-4. It was 4-4 and level after the middle four but Bowring took the whole of the back four with George Williams winning 21-6 on his home Premier League debut for the club, Dave Lloyd winning to 17, Mark Taylor 19 and Glyn Hayward beating debutant Jamie King 14 and taking the MVP award. Home captain Rich Lawson spoke highly of “a great team performance as he was realistically looking for a 8-6 win but to win 10-4 against a quality team like Newport is fantastic. It gives us a big boost going into our next game.”<\/p>\n

It was even more of a remarkable game up at Castlefields as they were made to fight all the way by Hadley, eventually winning 9-5 by one shot. Dave Price was awesome first four in beating Clay Flattley to 8 and taking the MVP award,\u00a0but Castlefields took the other 3 games with Paul Williams being decent in the corners to earn the home MVP against Jim Fletcher. Hadley took three of the middle four though, with Nick Mullinder winning to 11, Jamie Wyer winning from 20-14 down and John Newey winning to 13. This meant they led by 3 going into the back four. But Rich Goddard and Adam Jones both won to put Castlefields in control before Rob Burroughs won to 6 for Hadley which meant that they\u00a0were one up with John Price trailing \u00a0Andy Judson 14-13. It was nip and tuck all the way before Judson won 19 to ease Castlefields home by a single shot.\u00a0But Hadley vice captain Rob Burroughs was “thrilled with five points against a top three team and showed great bounce back ability from last week’s poor home result.”<\/p>\n

Meole Brace also produced an eye catching performance with a 12-2 away win at last year bottom side Bylet, despite a great\u00a0win for home player Rob Steventon\u00a0who “played very well in the corners” according to away captain Mark Thomas. Craig Wilson led Meole Brace winning to 5, with further single figure wins for Darren Wellings to 7 and new signing Doug Edwards to 8. Tim Ealey was the other winner for Bylet.<\/p>\n

Sir John Bayley built on their 6 at Wrockwardine Wood last week with a solid 10-4 win over Chester Road. It could have been better for them having led 7-1 with Steve Burroughs being best winner winning to 7 and Alex Jones gaining the MVP but Chester Road gained 3 valuable points in the back and it needed home captain Tom Roden running out from 20-14 down against Andy Moss to stop them gaining all 4. Carl Hinton was best winner for visitors whilst Paul Latham gained the MVP award.<\/p>\n

Archibald Worthington gained their first win of the season against Wrockwardine Wood winning 8-6. Rob Adams ran a break of 21 from 2-0 down to help Archie secure the aggregate along with former captain and MVP John Paddington who won to 8. Stuart Rutter and away captain Stuart Clee was the best for the visitors winning to 10, with Stuart winning the MVP award.<\/p>\n

Ifton will be happy with their five points at St Georges, especially after taking three of the back four. It was a first four of single figures wins , with three going to the home side with Glyn Picknell and Nige Evans winning to 7 and Dave King to 9, but Giles Evans answered back\u00a0for Ifton taking the MVP and best winner award winning 9 over homester Jim Kellett. Simon Madeley marked his home debut with a great 21-6 MVP win over Nicky Jones but Craig Griffiths, Kieron Roberts and Brian Hayes all won at the back for Ifton with Ian Gaut narrowly beating Megis Phillips to steer St Georges to a 9-5 win.<\/p>\n

Burway beat Wem USC 10-4 with young debutant Curtis Metcalfe being the best winner for the visitors winning to 11. Former averages winner Wayne Rogers was the best for the hosts winning to 5 whilst Duncan Pressley and Stuart Bailey took the MVPs for the home and away side respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
