Hanwood’s Wayne Phillips continued their success from winning the playoff by winning the 2015 Newport Open.<\/p>\n

\nDispite admitting 2 reserve players, it is hoped the following will honour their entry acceptance and forward their \u00a310 entry fee to the club:

\nHanwood and County star, Wayne Phillips came out on top of the pile of, on the day 59 entries after narrowly defeating The George and Warwick & Worcester ace, Stewart Meddings, 21-17 in the final of the Newport Open competition on a cool late October day.<\/p>\n
\nWayne Phillips was forced into playing the corners after finding himself trail Alison Cotton 3-9 and 3-15. The length change worked favourably for Wayne as he fought back and tied the game 16-16 and despite a valiant effort by Ali to match him, a relieved Wayne edged home 21-19.
\nAn evenly matched game between Chris Worthington and Darrell Handley saw their card read 6-6 and 12-12, from which Chris pushed on to lead 19-13 before a late surge by Darrell to get back to get 17 before Chris eventually finished it 21-17.
\nStewart Meddings took a 6-0 lead over John Roberts to 9-4 then as John seemed to lose his weight, 20-4. And following a brief revival to double his score the game was soon over as Stewart won 21-8.
\nIn another evenly matched game that saw Glyn Storer fight back from 1-6 to tie with Chris Lambert 9-9. From there, neither could dominate until from 15-15 Glyn found himself on a mark and proceeded to run out 21-15.<\/p>\n
\nWayne Phillips saw a 6-0 start wiped out by Chris Worthington to tie 9-9 only for Wayne pushed ahead again to lead 17-11, only for Chris to come back to within 2 chalks leaving Wayne 17-15 ahead. From there the two players shared ends with Wayne getting home first 21-17.
\nMeanwhile, after an even start, Stewart Meddings was turning a 3-3 tie with Glyn Storer into a strong position of 14-3 before Glyn mounted a charge to trail 11-14 but then lost possession of the jack allowing Stewart to push onto 18-11 and eventually booked his final place winning 21-14.<\/p>\n
\nThe final began with Wayne Phillips playing the 45metre corners as Stewart Meddings opted for 30 mtr round pegs. Most notably though was both players not being able to hold the jack long as their opponent constantly outplayed the mark setter until at 15-15 they swapped tactics that proved favourable for Wayne as although they still couldn\u2019t hold the jack, the ends he won helped him by scoring double points that eventually, after 28 ends secured his win and the 2015 title 21-17.<\/p>\n
