Ifton overcome poor start, Meole have good start, Hanwood earn first win<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ifton showed their championship potential by coming back from 3-1 down away at Hadley USC to win 10-4 in week 2 of the Flowfit Shropshire Premier Bowling League. Hadley stormed out the blocks led by joint best winner Phil King and could have been 4-0 up had Dave ‘Rocky’ Jones not run out from 20-17 down. They took all of the middle four led by MVP Nick Hughes winning 8 in the corners and took three out of the back four, Ian Metcalfe the best winner 6, with Nick Mullinder responding 13 to be joint best winner and MVP for the home side. Captain Dickie Jones, who watched on from the sidelines, was pleased with the win. “After being 3-0 down, for which all of Hadley’s winners played well, we showed a good fighting spirit to take the next 7 games with Nick Hughes playing well and Kieran Roberts won in a game of good quality at the back to end a good night.” They are four clear of St Georges, who won 10-4 at home to Burway. Home captain Tony Rhodes led by example being best winner 9 with Lewis Scott being MVP winning 10. For the visitors Adam Dovey was best winner and MVP winning 11.<\/p>\n

Meole Brace impressed with a 10-4 win over Sir John Bayley. They took to their new green impressively racing into a comfortable 4-0 lead, described as “perfect” by captain Mark Thomas, with Pete Bound best winner and MVP 6. New signing Dave Redge ran out from 8 across to make his debut a winning one. Mark admitted “we didn’t know what to expect with our first game on our other green and with strong opposition in the Bayley. Their winners all bowled very well and we were pleased with the win.” Best winner for the away side was Norman Harvey 7 with Alex Jones taking MVP winning 15. Another Shrewsbury side impressed with Castlefields winning 12-2 at home to Wem USC to bounce back from Thursday’s defeat at the Bowring. Glyn Herbert was best for the home side winning 6 and earning MVP with Colin Smith winning 15 and Stuart Bailey 17, and MVP, for the visitors.<\/p>\n

The other Shrewsbury side, Hanwood, earned their first points and win of the season over Champions Newport 9-5. Mark Shore admitted “it was welcome relief to get back on home turf to get our first points of the new season on Friday. The history books will record that Russ Wellings secured the first point back in the league after our 19 year absence with a classy performance recording a 21-11 win over the former fishes captain Dale Rudrum. This was backed up quickly with Wayne Phillips defeating Chris Grocott. However, two titanic battles in the first four were undoubtedly the games of the night with ticker leading a two inch bowl for game at 20 across against Ash Wellings on a three quarter corner Mark only for Ash to fire it off but the classy Davidson repeated the shot with his second bowl resting in same spot as his first. Ash struck again only to miss narrowly. In the other game Tony Hotchkiss and Kevin Keary had a fantastic game with some good close bowling with Kevin winning 19 and earning a much deserved MVP. Not far behind him was Sam Millward with a dogged display against Greg Smith. Sam bowled some great bowls towards the end of the game to snatch victory and prove what a talent he is developing into. Dave Burton played superb on a very difficult mark to lead Mark Selley 14-0. Dave changed the Mark later in the game in a tactical switch to take ground from the on fire Millward and eventually got out 7. Individual display of the night was undoubtedly Nick Davies (earning MVP) who bowled extremely tight to win 5 (and be best winner) and gave Dave Chirpy Rhodes absolutely nothing. Dave commented after that he could do nothing to stop him when I lead a two inch bowl in front Nick just put in a back toucher. Also at the back Phil Lyttle bowled tight to run out 21-8. So on the board with a satisfactory 9-5 win and a healthy aggregate the team enjoyed a great atmosphere created by both sides and when the Hadley vs. Ifton result came in it confirmed to us the previous week we had met a great team with real championship potential. So on to the next game a tricky away tie against my Baschurch buddy Rich Lawsons Bowring!” Best winner for Newport was Mick Jones 14.<\/p>\n

Wrockwardine Wood earned a good 11-3 home result over Chester Road which leaves the visitors second bottom. Home captain Tom Langford said “it was a great win for us to start our home season, the green is getting better and quicker every week for us and we were concerned with Chester Road coming to us early that a heavy green would suit them. But Rob Jones and Mark Picknell bowled in the front tremendously well and Mark Clayton just missing out showed we were always ready to battle hard. The middle and Dale Downes was stand out for me as he bowled exceptionally well (to be best winner 4) and Martin Gaut grinded out a good win against Martin Lloyd. The back saw myself, Martin Williams and Phil Clee win well to seal the game and a great start for the Wrockites.” Andy Moss was best winner and MVP for the visitors, winning 10, with Stuart Rutter MVP for the home side winning 19. The closest game of the night was in Bridgnorth as Bylet won the aggregate by 9 with 5 winners against the Bowring. Best winner was returning signing Andy James 4 but MVP went to Jamie Taylor again winning 20 last on. Best winner for the visitors was Merit Champion Rob Roden 13, but Aaron King got another MVP winning 16.<\/p>\n

Ifton lead the table by 4 to St Georges, both winning two games. At the bottom are Newport with 5 points, but they have played just the one game. Four players have won two MVPs, Andy Moss, Stuart Rutter, Aaron King and Jamie Taylor, with Andy also leading the averages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
