Burway batter champs, Meole punish Hanmer, St Georges surge forward<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was a week of remarkable results in Gameweek 5 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League, none other than down in Ludlow. Burway earned their first ever whitewash in the league, inflicting it on a Bayley team for the first time since 2000, and the first on the defending champions since Battlefield lost 14-0 at Castlefields in 1995. Burway were excellent from 1-12, with only two close games in the entire match which they won 19 and 20. Best winners were Wayne Rogers and Pete Griffiths both 21-7 in a 103 shot win. Captain Chris Dovey said it was “a great result, we all bowled really well with a great atmosphere.” Meole Brace also recorded a great win at Hanmer by 9 games to 5 and by 9 chalks to inflict a fourth straight defeat on the league debutants. Meole skipper Pete Bound commented that “the team were up for it and good performances all round. Dave Redge played well as did Doug Edwards to win at number 12 (to be joint best winner 12 with Colin Beaman) as neither player had seen the green before. Mark Thomas winning after being 12-3 down was also a good performance.” Best winner for the home side was Jack Hewitt 10, who slip to bottom spot. St Georges put in another eye catching performance as they continued their revival after a difficult start. They hammered neighbours Wrockwardine Wood 13-1 which “was a great result from what was classed as bottom of the table St Georges,” laughed captain Tony Rhodes. “It was a superb effort really, bossing proceedings from the off and with Lewis Scott missing with work as well. Nice follow up to the result at Chester Road.” Only Phil Clee could win for the Wrockites 18, while best winner for the Dragons was Ian Gaut 7.<\/p>\n

Wem USC continued their good form with 5 winners at Ifton. Captain Graham Dulson said there was “some very good games played in a good spirit from both sides. Very pleased to win some close games, the lads fought well.” Wem had three 20 winners with Scott Thomas best winner 14, while Ifton’s best winner was Simon Tyler 9. Hanwood earned another 11-3 home win, their third of the campaign, as they beat Bylet with Dave Payne’s first start being a 21-2 to be best winner, while Rob Steventon was Bylet’s best winner 8. Newport beat Chester Road 10-4 in a clash of the former champions, Russ Pegram best winner for the 5 time winners\u00a08 with Martin Lloyd best for the 3 time winners 9. There was another 10-4 home win at Bowring where they beat Castlefields, Dave Lloyd best winner for them 5 with Callum Wraight responding for the record winners of the league, 9, both games in the middle as\u00a0Bowring took a 6-2 lead. The back four was shared with four close games, Bowring winning a 20 and 19 and Castlefields a 20 and 17.<\/p>\n

Meole Brace lead by 5 points to Burway, Wem USC and St Georges, while Hanmer are bottom by 2 points to Chester Road. Andy Wigginton still leads the League Averages with a 100% record and an aggregate of 41.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
