Hanmer shock Bayley, Bowring beat Burway, Ifton edge home<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hanmer shocked the League Champions Sir John Bayley in the 1st round of the Barlows Fire & Security Alan Mayhew Trophy as they beat them by 10. Their away side did the main job as they held the Bayley to just 7 chalks with three winners, Jack Hewitt the best 12 with Ant Bracken the best for the Bayley 11. Over at Hanmer and three winners at the front led by Jack Butler winning 7 gave them a great start and despite Kane Beaman winning 8 for the Champions they couldn’t pull it back in a 17 shot loss. Skipper Dave Ellison commented “it was a battling performance against a good Bayley side. We got off to a great start and were 40 in front off the first 6 blocks home and away and managed to hold despite a late Bayley comeback.” Bylet also produced a great performance by defeating St Georges again in a 22 shot victory. Another excellent away performance on the top green was the key holding the Dragons to a 11 shot loss despite Glyn Picknell winning 3, with Rob Perry the best of their 4 winners 11. In Bridgnorth and Rob Fuller was the best of their 4 winners 21-6 in a 33 chalk win. Lewis Scott was the best of the away side’s two winners 10.<\/p>\n

Bottom side Ifton are also through after beating fellow North Shropshire team Chester Road by 15 chalks. Skipper Dickie Jones said “we kept it tight away and had four winners at home. Another cup run would be nice.” A 26 shot victory at Ifton with Keiron Roberts the best of their 4 winners 7 led the way despite Chris Stretch winning 10 for the visitors. Over in Whitchurch an it was three winners apiece and Curtis Metcalfe helped keep the damage down winning 7 despite Paul Williams winning by\u00a0the same score for the home side in a 11 shot victory for them. Wem USC were the only team in the bottom four not to win as they lost to Hanwood by 21. They only won by 12 at home despite Derek Wright winning 8 as Glyn Wellings replied with a 6 victory. In Shrewsbury and Hanwood completed another good home victory by 33 chalks, Dave Burton the best of 5 winners 21-5, with Fred Bailey winning 9 to be only winner for Wem.<\/p>\n

Wrockwardine Wood comfortably beat Mid Shropshire League Leaders Hadley USC by 73 chalks overall. Hadley only had one winner at each venue, John Potter 12 at home and Phil King 19 away, with Martin Williams 10 away and Liam Stevens 2 at home the best for the Wrockites. Bowring got revenge over Burway beating them at home a few weeks ago by beating them by 18. They didn’t make the same mistake at home again with a 28 shot win this time around, Glyn Hayward winning 7 with only Jolyon Partridge winning for the Ludlow side 13. Over at Burway and Reece Farr led the three winners for the visitors winning 12, but Kiah Roberts’ 8 win helped Burway win by 10 at home but it was not enough. Captain Jamie King commented “it was a really good result considering we had 2-3 missing! I went with a young side away and to only lose by 10 there was brilliant! It gave our lads a first look at the green going into the league game in a few weeks. We did the business at home with the more experienced lads to get us over the line.”<\/p>\n

Newport beat Castlefields on the night but after playing two unregistered players it was Castlefields who will enter the next round. Both teams had several players out but Newport did excellently at the Fields winning by 22, Mark Selley the best of their 4 winners. Rich Goddard was best for the home side there 16. At Newport and it was Castlefields who had 4 winners of their own, Luke Jones the best of them 13 in a 8 shot victory before the two 0 winners meant they won by 37. Newport skipper Mick Jones was their best there winning 11.<\/p>\n

The 2nd round draw has thrown up a couple of tasty clashes with Hanwood and Bylet familar foes and Castlefields versus Bowring being a repeat of the Semi Final last season. Meole Brace and Hanmer have both won away at each other this season so it could be a case of who can turn that round. Ifton and Wrockwardine Wood is the other tie of the Quarter Finals, with Wrockwardine already having won at Ifton this season.<\/p>\n

Hanmer beat Sir John Bayley by 10 overall, winning by 17 at home and losing by 7 away.<\/p>\n

Meole Brace W\/O Donnington Wood<\/p>\n

Ifton beat Chester Road by 15 overall, winning by 26 at home and losing by 11 away.<\/p>\n

Wrockwardine Wood beat Hadley USC by 73 overall, winning by 41 at home and 32 away.<\/p>\n

Hanwood beat Wem USC by 21 overall, winning by 33 at home and losing by 12 away.<\/p>\n

Bylet beat St Georges by 22 overall, winning by 33 at home and losing by 11 away.<\/p>\n

Castlefields beat Newport by 14 overall, winning by 37 away and losing by 22 at home.<\/p>\n

Bowring beat Burway by 18 overall, winning by 28 at home and losing by 10 away.<\/p>\n
