GMT competition organiser, Stuart Rutter welcomed interested spectators and qualifiers to Wrockwardine Wood BC on a bright sunny Autumn morning that would see the already major player, Greg Smith of Hanwood move another step towards potentially becoming the prolific bowling champion of the future after eventually getting the better of Aaron Steele 21-17 in what would turn out to be the keenly fought final the Telford club’s open competition deserved.

Quarter final action
After an even start by both Aaron Steele & Adam Patrick that saw the scores 9-9, Aaron seized control to move on to lead 15-9 and soon finished the game 21-11.
Ed Wallis opened up a six shot 8-2 lead that Dan Petcher halved to trail 11-14 only for Ed to strike again taking it to 19-11 before finishing off 21-13.
After being handed a 1st rd bye following a fractured heal injury sustained that led to the withdrawal of Mark Selley from Newport, Paul Hemming’s early 7-5 lead over Wem USC’s Mike Dulson quickly become a 15-7, 18-12 and 20-15 deficit and had to fight hard to win 21-20.
Greg Smith turned a 7-5 lead over Russ Prosser in to a 14-5 in six ends and within another half dozen had wrapped up the win 21-7.

Semi final action
Aaron Steele made his intentions known as he quickly turned his 5-1 lead over Ed Wallis into 10-3 and then proceeded to run out 21-3 and also take the highest break(11) and most 2’s(9) prizes on his to winning a final place.
Meanwhile, Greg Smith was turning a 2-5 deficit into a 13-6 lead over Paul Hemming after which the game became difficult for either player to hold the jack for long but Greg was able to maintain his lead as they went to 16-9 and finally 21-11.

Final action
As the final began the day long sunshine ended the pace of the green slowed and Greg Smith took full advantage as Aaron Steele struggled to adjust as Greg took his 7-0(5ends) lead up to 13-2(10) using the corners to great effect until Aaron found his weight and from 4-16 changed the mark to one across the middle of the green clawed his way back into the game moving to 10-18(21) and 13-20(24) before Greg,
after being on 20 for four ends edged the winning bowl to finish 21-17(28).

Delighted 2017 Champion, Greg Smith was quick to thank competition organiser, Stuart Rutter who in turn thanked the green keepers along with club members, spectators and entrants and sponsors Wrekin Services Ltd and The Wrekin Housing Trust.
Sponsors reps – Kevin Gough &
