Fields retain title, Newport & Bayley win away, Chester Road move to 8th<\/strong><\/p>\n

Castlefields have retained the Salop Leisure Premier Bowling League and won it for a 10th time as they beat Hanmer 13-1 to stay 15 points clear with one game to go. Despite a rare loss for Mike Beer against Dave Ellison 18 at number one, they kept on course and Rich Goddard running out from 19-14 down sealed the title for them. Proud Skipper Alan Peach commented “well that’s the league tied up. To say I’m delighted is a understatement. We fully deserve to win the league after being 24 points behind Newport and going on a 12 game unbeaten run is terrific, averaging over 11 points per match. I did say at the start of the season we was a stronger squad this season with having Keith Wall and Jon Palmer playing. Also when we were written off at the halfway stage I did indicate the league was not a true reflection, we had played 2 more away games in the first half. I must give credit to my vice captain who cuts the green every home game, Graham Rogers and is always there to help out. He’s never flinched any job even though his dad is our president Mr Allan Rogers who is very very poorly. Allan we salute you!” Andrew Judson was best winner 5 for them, while Hanmer are now confirmed to be bottom and are now looking anxiously at the Mid Shropshire League and hope that St Georges will win it so there is no playoff. Newport’s 13-3 couldn’t prevent Castlefields from winning the league but it puts them in a very strong position to finish 2nd. Three 20 winners were key, as well as Dale Rudrum’s best card of 6, as they matched the highest away win of the season. Roy Bradburn’s 14 best win in the back prevented them from being able to catch Castlefields. Skipper Sam Millward said “brilliant result for us everything seemed to go in our favour as we won a lot of the close games. Chuffed for Peter Farmer to seal the Premier Averages and congratulations to Castlefields on winning back to back titles brilliant stuff second half of the season.” Pete’s 17 win at number 12 meant that Mike Beer’s loss made him win the Premier League Averages for a second season running. Sir John Bayley’s 11-5 win at Wem USC would usually be a good result but Newport’s bigger win means that 2nd is most likely out of reach now. Scott Simpson was best winner 6, while Colin Smith was best for the home side 7.<\/p>\n

The battle for fourth place couldn’t be closer as St Georges beat Hanwood 12-2 to move one point clear of them. Captain Ian Gaut said “another much improved second half home performance cementing our top six spot. Andy Morgan’s win against Colin Beaman set the tone for the night with several top notch winners to close out our home programme.” Clay Flattley was best winner 5, with Wayne Phillips best for the visitors 10. Wrockwardine Wood are level with Hanwood now after beating Ifton 11-3, a game with no single figure cards. Steve Roberts was best winner 11, with Craig Griffiths and Ian Metcalfe best for the visitors 18. Chester Road’s 11-3 win over Bylet moved them from 13th to 8th place. Andy Moss is returning to his best winning 4, with James Duce best for the Islanders 8. Burway beat Meole Brace 10-4 with Adam Dovey and Mark Rogers best cards winning 8, while Julian Cooke stunned Kiah Roberts with an outstanding performance winning 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
