2008 “Top 16” Mick Jones Trophy

The Top 16 competition for the “Mick Jones” Trophy was held today at Craven Arms with all 14 clubs represented together with the League Merit winner and the player with the Most consecutive wins. As Peter Farmer had won both the “Merit” and most “Consecutive wins”, Mick Jones, the Trophy donor invited Castlefields young gun “Michael Beer” to make up the 16.
Peter Farmer was an early casualty as he fell to Newport’s Alan Davidson in a field littered with current and past Shropshire county players. However, it was Andrew Foster from Archibald Worthington who took the eye with impressive performances throughout the day and with Alan Davidson winning his quarter and semi finals matches against Mark Selley and Brian Shore respectively, they met in the final and represented two of the less fashionable clubs in the League. Andrew took an early lead and led 12-3 until Alan replied with a break of ten to lead 13-12 in his favourite corners. it was then nip and tuck until at 18 across, Andrew, known as “Fozzie” counted a double as Alan promoted one of Andrews short bowls and then at game on Alan went through the end, just missing the jack to leave the Archibald Worthington player basking in his biggest success to date.
