Castlefields won the 30th Anniversary Competition today after beating last year’s treble winners Sir John Bayley in the final. The 10 time league winners had Wayne Rogers and Mike Beer win their doubles match 21-8 after being just 7 across and having an 11 break. At this time Jon Palmer led Scott Simpson 18-17 before coming off.
In the Semi Finals Castlefields beat Wem USC by 25, Jon Palmer winning 2 meaning they had won the game despite Wayne and Michael being 10-3 down at the time against Gareth Davies and Ian Metcalfe. Sir John Bayley defeated Bylet by 11, Scott Simpson winning 18 and Tom Roden and Scott Harries winning 13.
In the Quarter Finals the Fields got past St Georges by 9, Wayne and Michael winning 6 despite Pete Farmer winning 15 for the Dragons. Wem USC defeated Highley by 11 with Colin Smith coming back from 13-8 down to win 15. Sir John Bayley beat Meole Brace by 15, Scott Simpson winning 13 and Tom and Scott 15. The closest game of the day was between Bylet and Wrockwardine Wood. Rob Roden beat Rob Fuller 15, with Fuller having come back from 17-8 down. Cheryl and John found themselves 11-0 and 13-1 down before having a break of 19 to go 20-13 up and win 14 to win by just one chalk.
The 1st round saw Meole defeat rivals Hanwood by 5, Mark Thomas and Doug Edwards winning 12 after Rich Lawson had won 17. Bylet got past Hanmer by 21, John Newey and Cheryl Caswell winning 7. Wrockwardine Wood edged past Horsehay by 8 with Jamie King and Rob Roden winning 6, while the Bayley got a bye.
On the grass green, which had been prepared immaculately, St Georges got past Adderley by 27, Keith Wall and Martin Gaut winning 4 and Pete Farmer 11. Castlefields beat Hadley USC by 19, Jon Palmer running out from 14-9 down and Mike and Wayne winning 9 from just 6-4 up. Highley defeated Newport by 8, Danny Statham and Stu Gittings winning 7. Wem USC received a bye.
