Pool A&B 2017

Pool A 1st round:

St Georges and Bowring progressed to meet each other in the Semi Finals of the Pool A with contrasting wins. St Georges comfortably beat Meole Brace on Chester Road to get through, winning by 38 overall. They only led by 2 after the first four though, with Craig Wilson’s best win of 8 keeping Meole in the game. But after Ian Gaut won 3 it was game over for Meole. Bowring had a much closer game with Newport, coming through my 9 overall. Stand in captain Rob Roden commented “we are happy with the win and without 2 players who in Jamie King and Reece Farr would have played. We had a good start having 3 winners from 4 and matched them in the back.” Josh Bradburn was best winner for them 10 with Phil Emery’s best win of 14 not enough for Newport.

Pool A Semi Finals:

St Georges and Sir John Bayley made it through to the final of the Pool A after narrow wins over Bowring and Hanwood respectively. St Georges had to come from behind to win their game, with stand-in captain Glyn Picknell describing how it went. “We were 9 down off the front, and with the back four on the we were looking like losing. But Nige Evans was 20-5 down and got 12, Lewis Scott virtually ran out from 6-5 down to win 7 (to be best winner), as did Clay from 13 across. Ian Gaut was left on the green at 17 across with us 3 shots up. He then managed to get the 2 needed for us to squeeze through.” Best winner for Bowring was Jamie King and Rich Lawson 12.

The Bayley came through their game a little easier but it was still a close game on Chester Road. “It was a good match and we were pleased to progress through to finals night. Said stand-in skipper Spencer Clarke. “We led by 8 chalks after the 1st four although Hanwood responded well and had two good cards going for them in the 2nd four although our lads stuck to the task well, as we edged out by 15 chalks in the end to set up a final clash with St. Georges on Friday night.” Best card for the Bayley was Spencer himself 10 while Ash Wellings was the best for Hanwood.

Pool B 1st round:

Wem USC found some form as they progressed against Bylet by just 2 chalks at Hanwood. They only had three winners but Mike Dulson’s 8 win helped them get through, and vital form and practice ahead of the playoff final. Captain Graham Dulson said “it keeps our players playing and ready for the playoff game. We seem to have more players on form than all season with games on Saturday and Sunday so the players are getting plenty of games.” Rich Morris was best of the 5 winners for Bylet 12 but it wasn’t enough. Burway had a comfortable win against Hanmer by 41 with 7 winners, Nick Lewis the best of them 10, with Richard Pullen the only winner for Hanmer, 17.
