Bayley beat Burway, Hanmer fightback, Hanwood earn 7 again

Sir John Bayley won away at Burway again as they earned an 11-5 win there in week 9 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League. They repeated their win there last season to keep their place at the top end of the table. Spencer Clarke was their best card 21-7, with Wayne Rogers best for the home side 12, who have not got going at all this season yet. Newport remain top of the league after a 12-2 win over Wem USC. Dave Rhodes led the way with a 6 card, as Mike Dulson was best for the opposition 16. St Georges matched that score over Chester Road, whose struggles continue. Lewis Scott continued his hot form, leading the May Player of the Month table, as he was best winner again 21-3. Martin Lloyd was best for the Whitchurch side 13. Castlefields maintained pace with the top teams as they defeated Highley 11-3. Adie Rowe won 2 to be their best winner with Dave East the visitors’ best 9.

Hanwood earned seven winners again at Wrockwardine Wood just like last season, but lost out on the aggregate again. Captain Mark Shore admitted he was “a bit disappointed after going 4-0 up that we couldn’t snatch the agg. Good battling performances from some of our lads who didn’t win but clawed chalks back which could have made the difference.” Rich Lawson and Simon Lane were best winners 10 for them, while Martin Williams helped the home side win the aggregate again by winning 7. Hanmer had a fightback of their own at the Bylet to get 5 winners. Skipper Dave Ellison said “we didn’t start very well being 5-0 down and hoping lightning wouldn’t strike twice after getting nil last year. Robin Bennett soon put that right winning to 7 (to be best winner) and that was quickly followed up by another 4 winners with Mike Gilpin’s 8 leading the way. I didn’t know this until Saturday but we only got 8 more chalks than last year but ended up with 5 winners which is showing how we are progressing this season.” Ifton got a good 5 winners at Meole Brace which delighted captain Dickie Jones as “Meole played well so I’m happy to have come away with 5 winners.” Julian Cooke was best winner for the home side 4 with Dave Bond and Martin Jones the best for the visitors 14.

Newport lead St Georges by 4, with Castlefields and Sir John Bayley a further point behind. Ifton are 4 behind Chester Road but with a game in hand. Callum Wraight leads 7 people on 8 wins, while Keith Wall now has won 8 consecutive games after losing his first.
