Well done to Spencer Clarke of Sir John Bayley on retaining the Shropshire Merit last week, beating Callum Wraight from Castlefields in the final again. He beat him 15 in a very similar score to last season, having another good run near the end of the match, and became the first player since Callum in 2012 to retain the title. Spencer had beaten Castlefields’ Paul Williams 18 in the Semi Finals while Callum got past Stuart Rutter of Wrockwardine Wood 6, with all four players going to the All England finals.
There was other success for our bowlers over the last month or so. Highley’s Darrell Handley won the Moor Lane Open after beating Gareth Herbert in the final 14. Callum Wraight won the Pokestars Isle of Man Invitation by defeating former St Georges player Paul Bailey 13 to win the £1000 first prize. A former Castlefields player in Steve Freer also won the Staffordshire Merit, by beating Sir John Bayley’s Gordon Hawkins 13 in the final. We also had another near miss with Lewis Scott losing 12 in the Welsh Merit final to Geraint Booth. But both players will be taking part in the All England on Saturday 27th July at Rolls Royce from 10 a.m.
Mike Beer also reached the final of the Wigan Subscription Classic, losing out to former All England winner Darren Plenderleith 31-14 in the final.
Well done to all players who won or performed well in these competitions.
