Telford Derby, Bayley look to bounce back, Hanwood aim for away win
There is a Telford derby in week 3 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League as St Georges travel to early leaders Wrockwardine Wood. Both teams have started the season well, and will head into it looking for a good result to keep them at the top end of the table. Stand in Wrockites captain Rob Jones says “we welcome our nearest rivals St Georges from down the road. I’m expecting a good game they’ve made a few interesting signings over the Winter. From my side, I have a full squad to pick from so deciding who gets left out is always difficult. Looking forward to a competitive game with a decent atmosphere.” Opposition captain Tony Rhodes admits it’s a “really tough local derby with the team who’s coming flying out of the blocks. Ok it’s the 3rd week, but wouldn’t we all love to have a home and away win already. We’ll quietly go about our business and hope we can come away with an acceptable number of points. Our first 2 games has come down to winning the close games. This game may well be the same.” Castlefields will look to take advantage of the two teams around them playing each other as they entertain Ifton. Ifton though got a good 4 at the Champions Sir John Bayley first game and will be looking for at least the same. Hanwood are also tied with the Fields and Dragons on 17 points, and know an away win at Chester Road will continue their momentum. Chester Road have enjoyed a solid start to the season, and will be looking to continue that with another home win.
The Champions will look to bounce back from their defeat at St Georges last week as they entertain Newport. Newport are a much different team from when they last visited the Bayley, but will be hopeful of a good points haul given their good green knowledge. Captain Ayden Smith says “we know with a brand new reformed team going away to the Bayley is going to be extremely tough, but I honestly think we could pick up more than a few points. We all know how good the Bayley are especially on their home green. I think we are the surprise package for the season as previously stated.” The early bottom two meet with Highley hosting Wem USC, with the home side knowing they must really win this one to keep in touch with the pack. Wem will look for a good away haul, and bring in “Mel Jenkins after a number of years away and would hope to push Highley close in an important game even at this time of season” according to skipper Derek Wright. Meole Brace and Bylet have had good starts and meet in Shrewsbury looking to continue that form, while Burway will look to bounce back from their unlucky 2 at Hanwood last week as they entertain Hanmer. The away side had a disappointing home win themselves last week but will look to get a repeat of the 6 winners from the week before away at Chester Road.
