Hanwood earn away win, Burway and Meole get good home wins
Hanwood earned their first away win of the season as they won 11-5 at Chester Road in week 3 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League to keep up their good start to the season. Joint captain Mark Shore was “very pleased with the lads performance throughout the team to get our first away win of the season. The lads battled for every chalk. Stand out performances from Darren Wellings and Ash Wellings who were both quality throughout their games. Great fighting spirit from Phil Lyttle to win from 9-2 down as well. For Chester Road Jen Rogers played very well to put Rich Lawson under significant pressure which made Turk dig deep to get his point. Also David Payne, who was a last minute replacement for Wayne Phillips, put together a run of 2s away from home to win in the front. Very pleased with the display all round. To be up in third after three games having played away twice sets us up nicely to welcome the champions to the Cock on Friday with forecast thankfully set for dry conditions.” Gary Neal was best winner 6, with the home side’s best being Ian McDonald 4. Wrockwardine Wood still sit top after a 10-4 win over neighbours St Georges. They had Scott Moseley and Andy Jones as best winners 7, while Sonya Lucas was best for the away side 11. Castlefields are second after a good 11-3 home win over Ifton. Adam Jones was best winner 5 for them and Ian Jones for the visitors 9. Champions Sir John Bayley are 4th after a solid 11-3 home win over Newport led by Paul Evans’ 21-7 card. Former homester and captain Ayden Smith led the way for the Fishes 12.
Burway have enjoyed a good start to home life as they beat Hanmer 12-2. Joint captain Jesse James said “we’ve made a solid start to the season and the atmosphere amongst our lads is great. We played extremely well at Hanwood and felt a tad unlucky to only come away with 2 winners so Fridays win against Hamner softened that blow. Kiah “MUSH” Roberts had a proper battle with Jack Hewitt coming from behind to give us a solid start. Rob Jones has made an extremely good start winning 21-8 (to be best winner) Friday and beating Darren Wellings the week before. Onwards and upwards and we go to Bylet on Friday full of confidence. Special mention to Dave Wilding who will be making his league debut for us and we wish him all the best. VIVA LA BURWAY.” Nathan Lacey was best for the North Shropshire side, winning 12. Meole Brace had a good home win against the Bylet 11-3. Joint skipper Mark Thomas said it was “a great result for us, a few rubs helped us to a 4-0 lead and a superb performance from Craig Wilson in beating Sam Millward in the middle (to be best winner 7). We just couldn’t maintain it in the back but Dougie Edwards gave us some entertainment winning with his last wood!” Tim Ealey was best for the Bridgnorth team, 9. Highley are off the bottom after defeating Wem USC 10-4, a result that puts their opponents at the bottom at this very early stage. Dave East led the way 6 with Wem’s best being Colin Smith 13.
