Fields, Burway & Wrockties all win away, Newport earn good home win
There were three away wins in week 4 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League. Wrockwardine Wood continued their remarkable start as they won 13-3 again at Wem USC. Stand in captain Rob Jones was “delighted with Friday’s performance both on and off the green against a very good Wem side. First four turnaround on a number of games really shifted the momentum.” Stuart Rutter and Steve Broome were their best winners 8, while Ian Metcalfe was best for the home side 10. Burway won their first away match in nearly 5 years since they won at the Bowring 9-5, scoring their highest ever away points tally in a 11-5 win at the Bylet. Joint skipper Jesses James commented “as I said to you earlier in the week, our team atmosphere and togetherness this season is very good. Our result on Friday against Bylet was our first away win since 2017, (so I’m told), I’m sure you can put me right on that. Yet again Kiah Roberts had a ding dong battle and got out 21-20 from 20-15 down. Adam Dovey was superb in the middle (to be best winner 9) and my man of the match. Then we had county number 12, the always reliable Mr Rogers to get us over the line and secure the aggregate.” Best winner for the home side was captain Scott Harries 5. The third away win was at St Georges, where Castlefields scored a great 10-6 win there by just 3 chalks. Joint captain Adam Jones said it was “a really pleasing performance winning at a tough place in St. Georges who have started well. All of the side doing their bit in contributing to the win, Some good individual performances and good quality games on the green. Very competitive as always between both sides, really good atmosphere late on which made for a close finish which we came out on the right side of.” Keith Wall was their best 21-6, while Tony Rhodes and Ian Gaut was best for the hosts 10.
Newport had a good home win 11-3 over Highley to kick start their season, with Dale Rudrum leading the way with a 21-4 card. Andy James was best for the visitors 10. Hanmer enjoyed a 10-4 win over Meole Brace as Matt Beeston was best 21-4, with Will Tarrell’s 21-10 card replying for the Shrewsbury side. There was another 10-4 result at Ifton where the hosts defeated Chester Road. Best winners were Adrian Humphries 10 and Andy Smith 13 for the home and away sides respectively. Sir John Bayley will be happy with their 5 winners at Hanwood, Dave Lloyd being the best of them 14. Hanwood’s Darren Wellings was best for the home side 9.
Wrockwardine Wood lead by 7 to Castlefields, with Wem USC still sitting bottom just 3 points off Highley. There are 10 players who have won 4 out of 4, led by last year’s Averages winner Jamie King.
