Bylet end run, Fields equal record, Hanmer hammer Dragons, Hanwood whitewash Wem
It was an incredible set of results in week 8 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League as Bylet ended the winning start of Wrockwardine Wood after beating them 9-5. Bylet spokeswoman Cheryl Caswell said “we knew that we needed to get off to a good start and we managed to do just that, winning 3 out of the first 4 games 21-9, with both Rob Fuller and Matt Ealey playing very well. Into the middle and we knew that the Wrockites would fight back and that’s exactly what they did, taking 3 out of the 4 games in the middle, with Stuart Rutter leading the way 21-11 and Rob Roden playing very well to beat Tim Ealey. Sam Millward managed to steady the ship in the middle for us also winning 9, to give us a healthy lead on aggregate going into the back four. With the game getting tense and the atmosphere building, Steve Broome won 21-7 to be best winner for the Wrockites but we kept pushing and did really well to win the remaining 3 games to continue our recent home form and end the impressive start of our visitors.” Cheryl herself was best winner 8 for the Bridgnorth side. Castlefields matched the highest ever away points total in a match as they beat Chester Road 15-1, to match Sir John Bayley’s own 15-1 win in 2019. Joint skipper Adam Jones said it was a “superb result for us, first 4 at times looked nip and tuck we however managed to win all the games which gave us great momentum which we carried on throughout the rest of team.” Callum Wraight managed to get back in time from his successful week in Whitby to be best winner 7, while Martin Lloyd was the home side’s winner 13.
Hanmer earned another impressive home win as they beat St Georges 12-2. Captain Mike Gilpin says we “needed a response after a disappointing result and I got one. We went two nil down then never looked back. Pete Farmer showed his class with an immaculate display for St Georges. Very difficult to single one player out after that but Leroy Pete does what everyone expects on Hanmer against Josh Bradburn in a very good game. Hopefully we can kick on next week and improve our away form.” Best winner for the home side was Jack Hewitt 9, with Pete Grimston best for the away side 7. Hanwood whitewashed Wem USC 14-0 in an incredible game where 7 of Wem’s players scored 17 or above but didn’t manage to get 21. Joint captain Mark Shore said “this was what we wanted, a big reaction to a couple of poor results. We welcomed Dan Williams to the team for his first premier game in 9 years and he performed as expected. He was solid on the green and sparked us off the green. We won all of the close games and Wem we’re unlucky not to pick up one or two points. Glyn Wellings was superb in the front being the best card (3) but the team as a whole bowled well or dug in deep to get our first clean sweep in a few years. Very happy skipper and I hope the team continue in this form whilst I’m away overseas.” Sir John Bayley just dipped out at Meole Brace by 3 chalks as they lost 10-4. Captain Chris Worthington’s 9 win was their best, with the home side’s being Will Tarrell by the same score. Ifton defeated Newport 11-3 to move up the table with Paul Hallett leading the way 6, and Allan Smith best for the visitors 18.
Wrockwardine Wood now lead by 6 to Castlefields, with Hanwood a further 15 points behind. Wem USC and Highley are a point behind Newport at the bottom. All three that had a perfect record so far all lost but Jamie King still leads 8 other players on 7 wins.
