Wrockwardine beat Champs, Fields win narrowly, Road go close, Newport edge home
Wrockwardine Wood beat the Champions Sir John Bayley 11-3 in week 13 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League to further extend their lead at the top of the table. Captain Rob Jones said it was an “unbelievable result and performance given the circumstances, we had 6 regulars missing for arguably our toughest home game of the season. To juggle things around and win 11-3 is a testament to where we are at right now as a group.” Scott Moseley was best winner 10 for them, with Alex Jones best for the Bayley 15. Castlefields kept up the pressure on them with a 10-6 win at Highley, by just 2 chalks. Joint skipper Adam Jones says it was a “good win last night for us against Highley. We thought the game could be close on aggregate and so it proved with us winning by two. Super effort from the team with us missing 3 quality players.” Best winner was Adam himself 10, with Darren Gittings replying for the home side 8. It was just as close at Wem USC where Chester Road got 6 winners but lost out by 2. Captain Gary Beff said it was “another excellent performance away backing up a superb home win last week. Just disappointing to miss out on the agg which potentially would have been huge for us.” Mark Holland was their best winner 10, with Scott Thomas best for the home side 7. It was even closer at Newport, as the home team beat Meole Brace by just 1 chalk, 9-5. Skipper Ayden Smith was “very happy to come out with a win. The green was a very happy pace for an away bowler so to get a w was our aim. Very chuffed with any win home or away, the team pulled together.” Mark Selley and Pete Cookson were best winners 13. Mark Thomas was best for the away side 10. St Georges won 10-4 but by only 9 chalks against Burway. Martin Gaut led the way 8, with Dave Wilding best for the Ludlow side 9. Ifton defeated Bylet 11-3 with Nicky Jones best winner 4 and Scott Harries best for the visitors 12. Hanwood went one better and beat Hanmer 12-2 as Ash Wellings was best winner 5 and Robin Bennett’s 17 win best for the away side.
Wrockwardine Wood lead by 13 to Castlefields, who are 21 ahead of Hanwood. Bylet are 10 behind Highley and Chester Road at the bottom. Alex Jones leads Ash Wellings and Will Tarrell at the top of the League Averages, with Mike Gilpin’s run having come to an end at 9 wins.
