Wrockties & Highley fightback, Bayley win away
Wrockwardine Wood fought back to keep their stunning run going at the top of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League. Captain Rob Jones says “we were away to Hanwood, probably the best home side in the league. 3-1 down and up against it, to not have another loser to game 12, fantastic. Unbelievable result. We know we are there to be shot at now, but this group is playing well and believe.” Andy Jones and Jamie King were best winners 11, with Darren Wellings best for the home side 8. Castlefields lost ground to Wrockwardine Wood as they lost 8-6 at Newport. Newport skipper Ayden Smith said “we knew it was going to be a tough game. Before the game I said any win is a good result and we managed to get over line. Dale Rudrum was top class and back to his old self against Glyn Herbert and Cody Everitt put in a solid performance too (to be best winner 4). Ash Gregory and Mike Beer had a top game as did myself and Andy Judson. Onwards and upwards!” Mike was best winner 14 for the Fields. Sir John Bayley moved into 3rd as they won 11-5 at Ifton. Scott Simpson was best winner 3 for them, with Paul Hallett best for the hosts 9. St Georges are four points behind in 5th as they beat Meole Brace 11-3. Ian Gaut was best winner 3 and Julian Cooke was best for the visitors 9.
The closest match of the evening was at Highley as they defeated the Bylet 8-6 and by 2 chalks. Captain Stuart Gittings says “well where do I start, we had a few missing through Covid and holidays, so we had to bring a couple in. Took a chance on the front four with AJ being our only recognised home team player but he turned in a good card from being a few down. Scott Harries bowled well and won single figures (7 to be best winner). John Newey also bowled very well and won 10 but Jacob Ash, who had only played a couple of home games, turned in a great performance to beat Sam Millward. Dan Davies was excellent against Frank to win 11, Frank bowled ok. Dave East got us back in the hunt with a good win to 6 against Gary Cooper (to be best winner). Sean Lockley, who was 16-1 up against Rob Fuller, looked like being a game changer but credit to Rob who came back but Sean eventually won 17. Bruno Heath, another one of our young starlets, had a great game on his debut just ducking out 19 to Jamie Taylor. So we ended up all square and 6 chalks down after eight. I managed to beat Cheryl Caswell 15 and Matt Ealey beat Danny 18 so 5-5 and 3 shots down looking a little grim by then as Dennis Edwards was 19-9 down and Jon Heath 14-12 up. Jon managed to win to 14 and Dennis came back to lose 20. In the end delighted with a win and keeps a half decent gap between us and the bottom. It was pleasing to get a home win as the previous two matches we finished 6-6 and lost by a couple of shots, just goes to show our great game has very small margins at times. Onto Wrockwardine next who are flying high but we feel we have a few scores to settle after our County Cup defeat by default.” Hanmer beat Chester Road 10-4 to put a gap between them and the bottom. Matt Beeston was best winner 5, with Gary Beff best for the Road 10. Wem USC also extended their gap to the bottom by beating Burway 9-5. Gareth Davies continued his impressive debut season by being best winner 7, with Wayne Rogers replying for the visitors 12.
Wrockwardine Wood are 19 ahead of Castlefields, who are 23 further ahead of Sir John Bayley. Bylet are 8 points behind Chester Road at the bottom, who are another 4 behind Highley. Alex Jones leads Ash Wellings at the top of the League Averages.
