Newport hammer Highley, Ifton win at Road, Hanwood fight back
Newport hammered Highley on their own green 13-3 in week 17 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League to put a dent in their survival hopes and make Newport all but safe. Stand in skipper Aaron King was “really pleased with the result, as a team we got off to a flying start taking all four winners from the front which is something I don’t think we’ve even managed at home this season. We kept the momentum going to get a really good away win. The Highley green was running well which suited us as a team. They’re a good bunch of lads and wish them the best for the rest of the season.” Newport’s best winner was Mark Selley 6, with Dave East best winner 8 for the home side. Bylet would have been surprised they gained a point on Highley as they got 4 winners at Burway. Sam Millward was their best winner 9 with the home side’s best being Kiah Roberts 7. Chester Road missed the chance to put some distance in between themselves and the bottom two as they lost 11-5 at home to Ifton. Ifton captain Dickie Jones was on holiday but commented on “a great win considering we had six players missing from the previous game, Tommy Lowndes making his premier league debut won to 3 (to be best winner) and Dave Bond’s win at the back got us the match win.” Ben Hinton was best winner for the home side 9.
Wrockwardine Wood continued their march to their first Premier League title with a 11-3 win over Wem USC. Scott Moseley won 6 to be best winner for them while Scott Thomas and Connor Whitehall were best for the visitors 17. Castlefields lost ground on them as they beat St Georges 9-5. Graham Wall was their best winner 6 with Pete Farmer best winner for the Dragons 15. Hanwood produced a great comeback to draw at Sir John Bayley. Joint captain Mark Shore said it was a “great result from 5-0 down. In the front everyone was in their game but we just couldn’t convert those games into wins. Then in the middle Gary Neal (best winner 6), Wayne Phillips and Andy Duckett put us back into the game and only two chalks behind. Rich Lawson had a fantastic game to pip Spencer Clarke. When Simon Lane came off it left Phil Lyttle on the green battling back from 19-10 to 19-17 down. At this point Phil led a real close bowl and the maths was being checked on the side of the green we realised he need one for the win. Scott Simpson then pulled out a fantastic draw to win that end and got out the following end.” Dave Lloyd and Clay Flattley were best winners for the Champions 13. Hanmer got their best away result since the opening game as they got 5 at Meole Brace. Lee Peate and Andrew Armstrong were best winners 16 for them, while Julian Cooke celebrated his recent Senior County call up with a best win of 3 for the Shrewsbury side. Wrockwardine Wood are 24 points clear of Castlefields, who are another 22 ahead of Sir John Bayley. Bylet are one behind Highley at the bottom, who are another four adrift of Chester Road. Alex Jones is on his own with 15 wins at the top of the League Averages, and has also won 9 consecutive games to join Mike Gilpin.
