Hanwood, Ifton & St Georges win away, Hanmer earn super seven
There were three away winners in week 19 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League. St Georges were the biggest of them to win at Wem USC 13-3. Stand in captain Andy Morgan said “it was a fantastic result, from one to twelve everyone played well, especially on a green like Wem which is never easy. But a special word about Pete Farmer who makes it look so easy, he was outstanding.” Best winner was Josh Bradburn 4 with Scott Thomas best for the home team 10. Hanwood won at neighbours Meole Brace to end their unbeaten home record. Joint skipper Mark Shore said it was a “great win for us away on a very slick surface at Meole Brace. Some great games and good battles throughout. After sharing the first four we took control of the game in the middle four with great wins and performances from Richard Addison (best winner 10) and Gary Neal backed up with a well fought win from Andy Duckett beating Craig Wilson with a wonder bowl in the last end in 3/4 corners. Into the back it looked like Meole were right back in it with good wins from Chris Stretch and Mark Thomas (best winner 9) but late replacement for us Craig Ashley pulled out a stunning win to leave Simon Lane on the green with us two chalks up. Yet again Simon held his nerve to get us over the line.” Ifton won at bottom placed Highley 10-6 to bounce back from their home defeat the week before. Skipper Dickie Jones said it was a “good away win on a very difficult green. Joey Williams and Martin Jones (best winner 7) got us off to a good start. Kieron Roberts played well from 10-2 down to win 18 and that helped us win the agg by 2.” Frank Leek was the best winner for the home side 8.
Hanmer got a super seven winners at Castlefields. Captain Mike Gilpin said “I’ve been waiting all season for an away result and we finally got one so I was a very pleased captain on Friday night. Ieuan Pugh continued his good form, (to be best winner 12 with Robin Bennett) since remembering he was actually right handed, with a very good performance at the front and Neil Hayes was also particularly impressive in his game against Andy Judson. Michael Beer was the stand out player for Castlefields with an impressive performance (joint best winner 8 with Adrian Rowe) underlying why he currently sits at the top of the averages.” Leaders Wrockwardine Wood extended their lead again by 3 with a 10-4 win over Newport. Captain Rob Jones said it was a “solid result against Newport at home. Thought they played well on a very difficult surface. Seven games remain to try and add as many points as we possibly can and see where that leaves us.” Stuart Clee was their best winner 5 and Phil Emery best for Newport 10. Sir John Bayley are level with Hanwood and St Georges in 3rd place after defeating Bylet 10-4. Owen Evans and Chris Worthington were best winners 5 with Dan Davies best winner 8 for the visitors. Chester Road picked up a home win 9-5 over Burway as captain Gary Beff led the way with a 21-2 card, while Adam Dovey was best for the Ludlow side 4.
Wrockwardine Wood lead by 33 over Castlefields at the top. Highley are 3 behind the Bylet and another 2 behind Wem USC. Mike Beer leads the averages on aggregate to Alex Jones and Mike Gilpin on 16 wins. Alex Jones and Mike Gilpin still lead with 9 consecutive wins, but could be joined by Mark Thomas next week who is on 8 now.
