Wrockwardine could seal title, Four teams meet in battle for 2nd
Wrockwardine Wood could win their maiden title in week 23 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League season with 11 points at home to Burway. Captain Rob Jones says “what this group of players have achieved this year is incredible. Full credit to them. We were very clear and focused on what the objective was this year from the get go, but from never finishing above 5th place ever to be 50 clear with four to play and likely tie it up mathematically with three to play is absolutely incredible. They have changed this club forever, and should be very very proud.” Burway still have an 11 point lead to protect for a top half finish. The battle for 2nd is hotting up as all four teams battling for that place meet each other. 2nd placed Castlefields host 4th placed Sir John Bayley with the Fields hoping to find some form again to keep that 2nd place they have held for months. The Bayley have been in good form recently and will fancy their chances of winning there. St Georges in 5th host Hanwood in 3rd with just 6 points separating the two teams. St Georges captain Tony Rhodes says it is an “interesting tie with a godo team, some of whom have been on the green on Wednesday (in the Challenge Match). I’ll always back our guys to play well on our green but there is quality in the Hanwood team and we cannot take anything for granted.”
The race to avoid bottom spot sees three teams separated by 3 points. Bottom placed Bylet travel to Newport hoping some ex-homesters will help them to a good points haul. Newport still could get a top half finish with a strong finish. The two teams directly above the Bylet are both at home, as Highley host an in form Chester Road, and Wem USC playing Meole Brace who are struggling for form that has seen them drop to 10th place. Ifton are flying and will know if they keep that form up they could improve on the 6th place they hold now, starting with a good win against a Hanmer side who should be safe now barring four very poor results to end the season.
