Bylet bottom, Dragons roar, Wrockites earn records
Bylet finished bottom in week 26 of the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League after losing 13-3 at home to Ifton. Ifton continued their incredible form in the second half of the season, they scored more points in their last 10 games than the first 16, to finish in 5th place. Captain Dickie Jones said it was “another good performance that saw us the end the season on a high. We were 3-1 up with Nick Jones winning 19 in a high quality game with Rob Fuller. The middle four saw us go 6-2 up. Geraint Williams, back in the team in recent weeks, played well to win his game and seal a superb away win that got us 5th place.” Best winner for them was Dicky himself along with Leighton Roberts, both winning 8. Bylet’s best were Scott Harries and Cheryl Caswell 12. The result meant that Highley’s 2 winners were more than enough on Castlefields. Danny Statham was their best winner 15 with Andy Judson the best for the Fields 9. Wem USC had a good 6 winners at Chester Road as they only lost by 2 chalks. Sarah Weaver was their best winner 11 with Chester Road skipper Gary Beff leading by example with his 21-8 win.
Burway suffered their worst ever home loss in the league as they blew their chance of finishing top half for the first time in the club’s history after getting just 2 winners at home to St Georges, which meant the Dragons finished 2nd after starting the night 6th. Pete Farmer was best of four single figure winners on the night 21-5, with Liam Dovey best for the home side 14. Meole Brace stole 7th place and a Pool A spot as they beat Newport 11-3, finishing a point above their opponents and Burway. Chris Jones and Will Tyler were best winners 5, while Pete Cookson was best for the visitors 10. Hanwood finished 6th after 5 winners on Hanmer, Craig Ashley best winner for them 14 and Ieuan Pugh and Dan Beeston best for the hosts 8.
The last word of these season reviews goes to Wrockwardine Wood, who have had the best season ever in this league’s history. I will go more into the records when I do a review of their title win next week, but they scored the most points, most wins and most away wins among other accolades. They won 11-5 at Sir John Bayley, Stuart Clee best winner 8 with Owen Evans best for the home side 11. Last words of these 2022 reviews go to Champion skipper Rob Jones, who said it was an “incredible performance, incredible season topped with another fantastic away performance at the SJB coming back from 3-1 down to win. To go from never finishing above 5th to winning our first premier league title and rewriting most of the records ever set is a true rags to riches story. But this group back each other every single game and have believed since day one in what we set out to achieve, and deserve everything they have achieved. Thoughts now move to next year and defending what we have, I’m sure those around us will improve but so will we, We have identified two players we believe importantly will fit into our group and at the same time improve the playing side, and we will do everything we can to secure them before we go again.”
Wrockwardine Wood win the league by a record 54 points to St Georges, who were just a point ahead of Castlefields and another ahead of Sir John Bayley. Bylet finished 4 adrift of Highley at the bottom of the league. Mike Beer wins the Leagues Averages for the first time, finishing one win ahead of Alex Jones and Mike Gilpin, and also won the Most Consecutive Wins with 10.
