Playoff Preview

One of the biggest games in Crown Green Bowls returns as Adderley and Bylet meet in the Playoff Final to decide who takes the 14th place in the 2023 Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier Bowling League. The Market Drayton League Champions beat Horsehay last week by 7 to earn their place in the final, while Bylet come off an intense battle at the bottom of the league this season. They are able to pick their strongest line-up, led by captain and former Premier League Averages Winner Scott Harries, who plays our Merit Semi Finalist Phil Jones in the first four. Dave Bamford impressed last week when winning 9, and has Grant Cooper at number 1. Tim Ealey has played in the five previous Playoff Finals Bylet have taken part in and won four of them, so will hope that experience helps against Richard Lewis. A key clash at 5 sees Ian Atheron take on county player Sam Millward, while John Newey has took part in these matches for Hadley USC over the years and plays the young Ed Proudlove. Adderley captain Gary Whitehall plays Simon Rhodes at number 8, while at the back and Shropshire Ladies Merit Champion Cheryl Caswell has Alex Lockett.

Adderley captain Gary Whitehall says “firstly a mention for Malpas Sports who pushed us all the way in the league and also Horsehay who did the same in the pre playoff. Our last playoff match in 2019 seems a long time ago when we qualified as Whitchurch league winners and to be fair we took Chester Road a lot closer than some expected. After a disappointing season in the Whitchurch this time we enter as Market Drayton league winners, so a lot of different names in the team compared to last time, some with premier league experience and others wishing to challenge themselves in Shropshire’s top league. We know the quality of the opposition and over recent days the wise men of bowls have assured me that we are underdogs for this match, however my Midland Masters’ teammate says you just never know! Funny game bowls, think that’s the attraction!”

Good luck to both teams tonight.

Start time is 7 p.m. and the referee is Tony Weaver. Entry is a £1 with an optional programme on the gate. There is also a raffle with 6 prizes on offer. There will be live scores here for those who can’t make it, and there will be live videos on our Facebook page here.
