Horsehay nearly shocked Wem USC in the 1st round of the Barlows Fire & Security Alan Mayhew Trophy as they lost by just 3 chalks. They won by 40 chalks at home with Gavin Bridge and Neil Harris the two single figure winners 7 and 8 respectively. Colin Smith was a vital winner for the Premier League side 17. At Wem and despite Chris Grocott’s fine 10 win for the Hoss, three single figure wins for Wem, led by Ben Parkes and Luke Grocott winning 8, meant they won by 43 there. Newport found it much tougher against St Georges, losing by 55. They did win by 4 at home, with Steve Handley best winner 8, and former Newport player Cody Everitt best for the Dragons 9. At St Georges and it was a clean sweep for the home side, led by Ian Gaut’s 5 win.
The closest match was at Adderley as they just beat Chester Road by 1 chalk overall. Best winner for the home side were Ed Proudlove and Jamie Brookes 12, with Dan Hand marking his debut with a 8 victory for the Roaders. It was nearly as close between Burway and Hanmer with it being just three chalks in Hanmer’s favour. They won by 14 at home with Lee Peate best winner 8, Adam Dovey replying for the visitors 21-9. At Burway and it was Nathan Lacey’s 9 win that helped limit Burway for 11 chalks, despite Harry Parsonage’s 6 win. It was a close game between Ifton and Meole Brace, with both teams winning away! Meole Brace won by 4 at Ifton, with Mark Thomas and Chris Stretch best winners 10, and Kieron Roberts and Neil Kershaw best winner for the home side by the same score. But it was Ifton who won by 11 at Meole Brace, Meole Open winner Andy Hughes best winner 11. Julian Cooke was best for the Shrewsbury side 13.
Record winners Castlefields romped in against Highley by 95 shots. They had a clean sweep at home by 72 chalks, Glyn Herbert best winner 21-4, while they had 4 winners away winning by 23 chalks. Gary Neal and Mark Taylor were best winners 9, with Dave Scriven best for the home side 16. The team they beat in last year’s final, Sir John Bayley, defeated Hanwood by 15. They won by 24 at home, Spencer Clarke best winner 10, just having one loser as Rich Lawson was best winner 16. At Hanwood and they limited the home side to just 9 chalks. Rich Addison was best winner for the Shrewsbury side 10, with Chris Worthington best for the visitors 12. League Champions Wrockwardine Wood defeated Bylet by 25 shots, winning by 5 away and 20 at home. Andy Jones was best winner away for them 13, with Cheryl Caswell best for the Bridgnorth side 12. At Wrockwardine, Sam Millward was best winner 5 and Tim Ealey’s 16 win best for the visitors.
The Quarter Finals on Wednesday 19th April see Wrockwardine Wood take on Hanmer, Sir John Bayley play Wem USC, Adderley against Castlefields and St Georges versus Ifton.
