Meole hammer Hanwood, Hanmer produce their biggest away win, Fields edge home, Bylet get away win
It was a week of incredible results in week 7 of the Taylor Support Shropshire Premier Bowling League. Meole Brace produced an incredible performance to beat neighbours Hanwood 13-1. Delighted captain Nick Davies said “to beat a class side like Hanwood 13-1 is an incredible achievement by the whole team. Rich Lawson had to play exceptionally well to edge past Julian Cooke for their only winner (19). But once Chris Jones (who in my opinion should now be considered for a county place) claimed a terrific win (best winner 2) over a classy opponent, there really was only one team in it. Special mention also to Dave Redge who out gunned another one of Hanwood’s stars. I’m very pleased for the players who from 1 through to 12 played tremendously well. Our home form has been great albeit the narrow defeat by Castlefields and I’m hoping this result will give the team confidence to push on and improve their away form. Finally I’d like to pay tribute to the Hanwood lads who were very gracious and sporting in defeat and enjoyed a few beers, some good banter and sandwiches with us after the game.” Hanmer produced their biggest away win and earned their highest number of points in a match as they won at Adderley 14-2. Skipper Ieuan Pugh said “going to Adderley our confidence was sky high due to our early season form and we always felt it was a place we could go and get a result due to us having the green knowledge. It was a total team performance on and off the green. A great night and we wish Adderley the best for the rest of the season. Looking forward to a tough home match next week against St Georges.” Best winner was Graham Bennett 8, while for the home side it was Jamie Brookes 16.
Castlefields got an important away win at Ifton by just one chalk in a 9-7 win. Skipper Adie Rowe said it was “a tight, close fought match that could have gone either way! Possible we were a bit fortunate to win by one with 5 winners but we fought for every point and that’s the attitude we have. The Palmer brothers excelled on the back for us (Jon and Tom were best winners 9).” Best winner for Ifton was Ian Jones 4. Bylet also got an important win at rivals Wem USC 11-5. Spokeswoman Cheryl Caswell says “for the first time this season, I think we actually played fairly well as a team throughout the game and looked in control from the off. Obviously we are delighted to get a crucial away win off the back of some disappointing performances and hope it will start to turn things around for us, with some tough matches to come.” Dan Davies was best winner 7 for them, with Sarah Weaver best for the home side 9. Sir John Bayley are two points behind the leaders Castlefields after an 11-3 win over Chester Road. Best winner was Alex Jones 5, with Paul Griffiths best for the Roaders 14. Wrockwardine Wood also closed the gap on the top two with a 12-2 win versus Burway. Dan Taylor was best winner 5, while Adam Dovey was best for the Ludlow side 9. Highley edged home against St Georges by 2 chalks with 5 winners. There were three best winners for each side. For Highley it was Bruno Heath, Darrell Handley and Frank Leek all 21-10, and for the Dragons it was Pete Grimston, Pete Farmer and Ian Gaut all 21-9.
Castlefields lead by 2 points to Sir John Bayley, with Wrockwardine Wood a further 3 behind. Wem USC are 7 behind Burway at the bottom, with Bylet a further 2 ahead. Mike Beer, Sam Millward and Rich Lawson still all have 100% records at the top of the League Averages.
